Wrestling Places Four at Keystone Classic

PHILADELPHIA (EMUEagles.com) — The Eastern Michigan University wrestling team placed four wrestlers at the Keystone Classic Sunday, Nov. 19 inside the historic Palestra on the campus of the University of Pennsylvania. As a team, EMU totaled 23 victories on its way to a sixth-place team finish with 77.5 points.
EMU's 15 grapplers were led by redshirt sophomore Noah Gonser (Grand Blanc, Mich.-Grand Blanc) who took runner-up honors at 133 lbs. It was his second straight runner-up finish at the Keystone after taking second at 125 lbs. last season. The Grand Blanc native went 4-0 to get to the finals, including one major decision and one pin, before falling in the title bout in a thrilling 26-12 match.
Redshirt senior Gage Hutchison (Buchanan, Mich.-Buchanan) was EMU's next top placer, taking third at heavyweight. The veteran won two tight bouts to get to the semifinals before losing to the No. 3 nationally ranked Nick Nevills of Penn State. In the consolation rounds, Hutchison pinned his way to a third-place finish, getting Ryan Cloud of Rider in 1:15, and then No. 16 nationally ranked Conan Jennings of Northwestern in just 27 seconds.
Eastern's other two placers were redshirt senior Kyle Springer (New Boston, Mich.-Davenport Assumption (Indiana)) and redshirt sophomore Zac Carson (Akron, Ohio-Lake) who both took fourth at 149 and 165 lbs., respectively. Springer and Carson both registered three wins apiece, including a pin from Springer, his first since 2015. Carson tallied two bonus point wins, one by technical fall, and another by his second pin of the season.
No. 1 Penn State took home the team title with 190.5, followed by Northwestern (156.5), No. 23 Rider (138), Drexel (118.5), and Appalachian State (96.5) rounding out the top-five. EMU finished ahead of host Pennsylvania, Harvard, Duke, Franklin & Marshall, VMI, and Sacred Heart in the 12-team field.
The Eagles return to the mats in a week, Sunday, Nov. 26, when they travel to Bloomington, Ind. for the Indiana duals. EMU will wrestle the host Hoosiers at 10 a.m., followed by Binghamton University at noon.
