YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) – The Eastern Michigan University women's basketball team hosted Hillsdale College in exhibition action Wednesday night, Nov. 1, just over a week before its season opener. All 14 Eagles scored as the Eagles cruised to a 70-57 victory over the Chargers at the Convocation Center.
Redshirt junior Danielle Minott (Miami, Fla.-Miami Country Day (Syracuse)) led the balanced offensive attack for the Eagles, scoring a game-high 15 points, while adding six rebounds and an assist to round out the box score. Fellow redshirt junior Lorraine Enabulele (Ajax, Ontario, Canada-Notre Dame (Kansas)) and sophomore Esabelle Levine (Eden Prairie, Minn.-Eden Prairie) added eight points each. Senior Micah Robinson (Ann Arbor, Mich.-Huron) dished out a team-high five assists, in addition to stuffing the stat sheet with a game-high nine rebounds and a steal.
As a team, the Green and White connected on 45.3 percent of its field goals, including four three-pointers. Eastern capitalized on Hillsdale's errors, converting 16 turnovers into 12 points. Defensively, the Eagles held the Chargers to a 30.3 clip from the floor and 29.7 percent from beyond the arc. EMU also racked up a 49-37 advantage in rebounding.
EMU found itself trailing Hillsdale early, but Minott put the Eagles back on track with a mid-range jumper, sparking a 20-2 run, where seven different Eagles converted field goals.
Entering the second stanza, Eastern began to settle into the game as Head Coach Fred Castro rotated the bench with 13 players earning minutes. EMU's offensive game improved tremendously, converting 10-of-17 field goals at a 58.8 clip compared to its 37.5 percentage in the first quarter. Outscoring the Chargers, 24-12, Levine led the Eagles with eight points as they headed into the break with an 18 point lead, 38-20
Remaining strong the first half was the defense, holding the Chargers to a 20.6 shooting percentage, including just 6-of-22 from deep. The Green and White held Hillsdale at bay, holding the visitors to multiple scoreless droughts in the first half totaling over 10 minutes of game time.
EMU's offense was flawless in the third quarter, going on a 13-0 run and expanding its lead to as many as 31 points.
When EMU's shooting cooled off, the Chargers used a 27-8 run to pull themselves within 12, but would get no closer. Freshman RayJon Harris (Euclid, Ohio-Euclid) and Robinson both broke Hillsdale's momentum adding a trio of points from the charity stripe. Remaining patient and allowing the clock to run, the Eagles continued to draw fouls, going to the line three times in the final minute to wrap up the 70-57 win.
The Eagles officially open the 2017-18 campaign next Friday, Nov. 10, when they welcome Florida A&M to the Convocation Center. The season-opening Education Day doubleheader with the EMU men's basketball team will begin at 10:30 a.m., while action for the women is slated to get underway at 1 p.m.
