YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) – The Eastern Michigan University volleyball team fell in straight sets to the University at Buffalo Saturday evening, Oct. 21, inside the Convocation Center. The Eagles (11-15, 3-7 MAC) were unable to avoid a 3-0 (15-18, 15-25, 19-25) sweep at the hands of the Bulls (13-8, 6-4 MAC).
Despite the result, EMU and Buffalo were not far apart in multiple categories. The Bulls out-killed the Green and White 40-33, and logged 36 assists, though the Eagles recorded 32 of their own. On the defensive end, the Bulls out-blocked EMU, 8-5. The biggest difference between the two sides was in attacking percentage, with Buffalo hitting at a .265 clip and EMU posting a .088 rating.
Mallory Rajewski (Midland, Mich.-Midland) led the Eagles with 26 assists and a pair of aces, while Camille Schomer (Rochester, Mich.-Oakland Christian) contributed a team-high 18 digs. April Houston (Minneapolis, Minn.-Southwest) had another strong performance, earning six kills and matching her .462 attacking percentage in EMU's 3-1 win over Akron Friday evening.
The Eagles started strong out of the gate and went ahead 7-4 in the first set. However, the Bulls regained their form and scored four of the next five points to even the score at 8-8. The two sides went back and forth in an opening set consisting of five lead changes, but the Bulls tallied 10 of the final 11 points to secure the first frame, 25-18. Rajewski logged nine of EMU's 10 assists.
Buffalo went on the offensive in the second set, recording a remarkable .424 attacking percentage. After EMU came from behind to tie the frame at 3-3, the Bulls recaptured the lead for good. The Eagles repeatedly cut the Bulls' lead to one, but the visitors broke through and rattled off four straight points to take a 12-7 lead. After two EMU timeouts, the Eagles trailed 17-12, and Buffalo pulled away by scoring eight of the next 11 points to grab a two-set cushion. Playing in their 26th match of the season, the Eagles have dropped the first two sets on only four occasions.
Facing the possibility of a sweep, the Eagles raced ahead to an early 7-4 advantage. The Bulls responded by scoring the next three points to level the score at 7-7, but EMU earned four of the next six points to go back in front, 11-9. Yet again, the Bulls would not go away quietly, keeping the score close before jumping ahead 17-15 and forcing the Eagles to call a timeout. Buffalo went on to register eight straight points and take a 23-15 lead. The Eagles fought back to win the next three points to cut the deficit to five, but the Bulls held off EMU to win 25-19 and complete the sweep. Buffalo's victory is the fourth in 22 matches all-time against the Green and White.
The Eagles return to action next weekend, Oct. 27-28, with a pair of conference matches. Eastern Michigan heads to University of Toledo on Friday, Oct. 27, before traveling to Muncie, Ind., Saturday, Oct. 28, to take on Ball State University.
