The Eagles win marks the largest over a MAC opponent since Jan. 27, 2014

BOWLING GREEN, Ohio (EMUEagles.com) –  The Eastern Michigan University men's basketball team cruised to an 81-53 victory over Bowling Green State University Tuesday, Jan. 10, on the road at the Stroh Center. Just their second ever win in the Stroh Center, the Eagles' (10-6, 2-1 MAC) 28-point win over the Falcons (7-9, 1-2 MAC) was their biggest victory over a Mid-American Conference opponent since Eastern knocked off Ohio University at the EMU Convocation Center, 76-40, back on Jan. 27, 2014.

As a team, the Green and White shot at a scorching 58.2 percent from the floor, including a 65.2 clip in the second half. Eastern outrebounded Bowling Green, 42-30, while holding the Falcons to a 33.3 shooting percentage and a 31.6 three-point percentage. Additionally, the Eagles forced 18 BGSU turnovers and picked up 10 steals, while blocking five shots and dishing out 14 assists in the win.

Eastern Michigan's offense was led by senior Willie Mangum IV's (Richmond, Va.-Marshall (San Jacinto College)) 19 points on 5-of-8 shooting with three long balls. Mangum also added a perfect 6-for-6 performance from the charity stripe. Both sophomore James Thompson IV (Baton Rouge, La.-Parkview Baptist) and senior Ty Toney (Atlanta, Ga.-Alpharetta (Georgia Highlands)) added 16 points, respectively. In addition, Thompson grabbed 11 rebounds, posting his ninth double-double of the 2016-17 campaign, while Toney dished out four assists and nabbed two steals. Additionally, junior Tim Bond (Baltimore, Md.-City College) posted 14 points, five assists, three rebounds and a block in the Green and White's dominant victory.

A Bowling Green three ball opened up the scoring after over two minutes no scoring to start the half. In the following possession Toney connected on a long ball to knot up the game. Another Toney bucket gave EMU their first lead of the game with 16:32 left in the half.

After trading buckets, Toney again sparked the Eagles to an 11-0 run over two minutes to give EMU a double-digit, 22-12, lead with 10:43 remaining in the first 20 minutes of play. Bowling Green scored the next four points, but Eastern responded with six in a row to take a 12-point, 28-16, advantage. The Green and White was able to jump up by 13 on a Quaran Jones (Fargo, N.D.-Ecorse (Findlay)) lay-in but the Falcons closed out the first half on an 10-4 run over the remaining 2:45 and the Eagles went into the locker room with a 36-29 lead. EMU remained on top despite not shooting a single free throw in the opening frame.

Toney was Eastern's top gun in the opening half, scoring 13 points in the first 20 minutes of action. The Eagles shot at a scorching 53.1 percent clip in the opening frame, while getting it done on the defensive end, forcing Bowling Green into nine first half turnovers. Bond added six points, three rebounds, three assists and a block in the opening frame, while Thompson went for six points and six rebounds to go along with a block and an assist.

Eastern jumped out on a 10-0 run to start the second half, jumping up by 17, 46-29. EMU added two more to its advantage before a 7-0 run from the Falcons cut into the Eagles' lead, 50-38, with 12:17 remaining in the game.

Blows were traded until the Green and White went on a 14-2 run, sparked by seven Mangum points, over a four minute span to jet out to a 28-point advantage, 77-49, at the 2:29 mark. The Eagles closed out the game to the tune of an 81-53 score, giving them their largest victory over an NCAA Division I opponent this season.

Eastern remains on the road to continue MAC play Saturday, Jan. 14, when it travels to Athens, Ohio to square off with Ohio University. The Bobcats and Eagles will tangle at 3:30 p.m. inside the OU Convocation Center. The game can be seen on ESPN3 or fans can listen live on 89.1 FM WEMU.
