Eagles Head to East Lansing for Spartan Invitational

After running a young lineup in the opening weekend, the veterans will race for the first time this season

YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) - After opening the 2016 season at the Detroit Titan Invitational, the Eastern Michigan University men's cross country team will now flock to East Lansing, Mich. for the Spartan Invitational, Sept. 16. After running a younger, less experienced lineup in the opening weekend, this weekend's lineup will likely see more veteran faces on the course.
"The MSU race will be the first evaluation of our fitness from what the guys did over the summer," remarked Head Coach John Goodridge. "We've only been together the past two weeks and with the weather having been quite warm to date, we really haven't yet seen much stress in our training."
Last weekend's race in Northville saw redshirt freshman Austin Sargent (Cedar Spring, Mich. - Cedar Spring) turn in a 12th-place finish in his Eagle debut, clocking in at 21:25.8 to lead the squad. Also turning in top-20 finishes were sophomores David Saporito (Warren, Mich. - Warren Mott) and Morgan O'Flahrity (Madison, Wis. - Edgewood), with Saporito crossing the finish line in 21:35.5 to take 18th, while O'Flahrity took 20th in 21:37.1.
Behind the top-three, junior Nick McFarland (Hillsborough, N.J. - Hillsborough) nabbed 22nd with a time of 21:43.2, while freshman Austin Wicker (Pinckney, Mich. - Pinckney) donned the Green and White for the first time, ultimately finishing 23rd in 21:47.5.
The Spartan Invitational is slated to take place Friday, Sept. 16, at Forest Akers East Golf Course in East Lansing. The event will begin with the men's collegiate race at 11:50 a.m., which is an 8,000-meter race, while the women will begin their 6,000-meter race at 12:30 p.m. For more information on the event, please click here.
