Second Half Goals Lead Eagles Past Oregon State

9/11/2016 4:26:00 PM | Soccer

Junior Alex Wilbanks recorded the first point of her career in the win

YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) – A pair of second half goals led the Eastern Michigan University soccer team to a 2-1 victory over Oregon State University at Scicluna Field Sunday, Sept. 11.

EMU challenged the Oregon State defense from the beginning, but the early crosses from the Eagles were disrupted or cleared, keeping the match scoreless.
OSU made a run down the far sideline, serving a ball into the box, in the fifth-minute. With commotion in the box, the service fell to the edge of the six where Oregon State's Helene Haavik slid a shot past sophomore Kaylin Williams (Kansas City, Mo.-Winnetonka).

Trailing 1-nil, the Eagles continued to trade scoring chances with the Beavers, ultimately heading to halftime with shots even at five. EMU's best opportunity came just before the end of the frame as the Green and White slipped a ball through the OSU defense to freshman Sabrina McNeil (Whitby, Ontario-Henry Street). Taking on the Beavers' keeper, McNeil pushed a shot just wide of the far post.

In the second half, the Eagles wasted little time evening the score behind the contributions of a few substitutes. Corralling the ball in the midfield, junior Alex Wilbanks (Ypsilanti, Mich.-Lincoln) played the ball up to McNeil who delivered a cross to the six where senior Ellie Tillar (Cincinnati, Ohio-Turpin) buried the goal on a volley.

Tillar's strike shifted the momentum in favor of the Green and White as the defense continued to shutdown the Oregon State attack. Junior Rachel Washburn (Hartland, Mich.-Hartland) sent a corner service through the six, narrowly missing sophomore Mia Colavito's (Mississauga, Ontario-Loyola Catholic) attempted header.

After a near score for EMU, the Beavers came back on a counter and broke through the back line. Splitting the defense on a ball played through, OSU garnered a 2-on-1 opportunity against Williams but the sophomore keeper dove on an attempted pass to keep the tie intact.

The Eagles' challenges paid off in the 84th minute as senior Madison Hirsch (Troy, Mich.-Troy) moved the ball up to senior Michelle Rollins (Hartland, Mich.-Hartland) just outside the box. Cutting back, Rollins shook her mark before beating two other OSU defenders, creating enough space to fire off a shot. Ripping a shot from 16 yards out, Rollins tucked the ball inside the near post for her first goal of the season. The 84th minute strike proved to be the game-winner as the Eagles secured a 2-1 victory.

EMU remains at home next weekend, Sept. 16-18, to close out non-conference play. The Eagles host Illinois State Friday, Sept. 16, at 5 p.m.
