After opening the season last weekend at the George Dales Invite, the Eastern Michigan University women's cross country team continued their 2016 season at the Detroit Titan Invitational, today, Sept. 10, in Northville. The Eagles finished second as a team, amassing 57 points by running a much younger lineup to gain valuable experience for later in the year.

"I was pleased with our performance today," remarked Head Coach Sue Parks. "The course is tough, and it was also muddy so it was not a day to run fast, but the girls competed well. This is the first year that we've had the luxury of holding out our top runners and still being competitive as a team."

Individually, the Eagles had three harriers finish within the top-15, as sophomore Sydney Meyers (Zionsville, Ind. – Zionsville Community) ran to a second-place finish, clocking in at 18:07.0, which was 13 seconds quicker than her time from last week. Behind her, fellow junior Danielle Bentzley (Birmingham, Mich. – Seaholm) also had a solid race, placing sixth with a time of 18:42.0. Rounding out the top-three Green and White finishers was redshirt-sophomore Rebekah Branham (Circleville, Ohio – Circleville), who placed 14th after crossing the finish line in 18:59.0.

"Sydney Meyers had a really strong race," explained Parks. "She was disappointed with her performance last week, so it was great to see her bounce back and run aggressively today. She ran 13 seconds faster this week compared to last week on a much slower course, so that is a great sign. Rebekah Branham, Allie Knoll and Claire Mesa also had strong races."

Redshirt-sophomore Allie Knoll (Warren, Mich. – Warren Mott) and junior Claire Mesa (Rockford, Ill. – Rockford Lutheran) also continued finding success early in the season. Knoll finished 23rd with a time of 19:28.1, while Mesa was just behind her in 25th after clocking in at 19:37.4. Knoll's time marked an improvement of nearly 16 seconds when compared to the first race of the year.

Next week, the Eagles will travel outside of Michigan for the first time this season, heading south to Nashville, Tenn. for the Commodore Classic
