EMU Student-Athletes Excelled in the Classroom in 2015-16

A total of 81 student-athletes earned a 4.0 GPA the academic year

YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) — With 13 consecutive semesters of a grade point average of better than 3.0, the Eastern Michigan University Department of Athletics continued its run of outstanding performance in the classroom during the 2015-16 academic year. The Eagles posted a 3.194 grade point average (GPA) during the winter semester, the second-highest mark on record.
"As a department, we set great academic, athletic, and personal expectations for all of our student-athletes," said Vice President and Director of Athletics Heather Lyke. "This year, our student-athletes' performances illustrate their commitment to these three pillars. Our coaches have established a culture where academic excellence and athletic achievement is expected. We are so proud of their efforts and ability to balance the demands of being a student-athlete. The Student-Athlete Support Services staff is also instrumental in helping guide and inspire our student-athletes to achieve at the highest level possible."
Other highlights of the year included:
• EMU student-athletes had another successful semester by earning a semester GPA of 3.186 for the Fall 2015 term and earning a 3.235 cumulative GPA after the Fall 2015 term; the fourth highest for both the term and cumulative GPA in the department's history.
• EMU student-athletes earned the second highest semester GPA in school history during the Winter 2016 semester with a 3.194 and also turned in the second highest cumulative GPA in history after the Winter 2016 semester with a 3.252
• A total of 81 student-athletes earned a 4.0 GPA this academic year, which is a 20% increase from the previous academic year
• 355 (69%) of our student-athletes had a cumulative GPA of a 3.0 or higher at the end of the academic year
• The federal graduation rate for our EMU student-athletes is 37% higher than the regular student body (2008-09 cohort)
• The Graduation Success Rate for EMU student-athletes is 81% (2008-09 cohort) which ranks as the highest percentage in school history
• Between Fall 2015 and Winter 2016 terms, 57 student-athletes graduated with either their bachelor's or master's degree. Additionally, there are another 27 pending potential graduation during the summer 2016 term.
• Of the 57 student-athletes that graduated so far, 9 graduated with Cum Laude honors, 10 graduated with Magna Cum Laude honors and 4 graduated with Summa Cum Laude honors.
• Eastern Michigan racked up 178 Academic All-MAC honors, the most in the league by 37 (Kent State – 141).
• An additional 46 student-athletes earned MAC Distinguished Scholar Student-Athletes accolades
• A total of 10 EMU standouts were selected for the prestigious weekly MAC Scholar-Athlete Award
• Volleyball and Women's Golf received NCAA APR Public Recognition Awards. This was the fourth straight year that volleyball has been honored
• The volleyball team posted a perfect 1000 multi-year APR rate for the fifth consecutive year
• The women's golf team posted a perfect 1000 multi-year APR rate for the first time in team's history
• Four teams equaled or exceeded their best multi-year score since the APR began.
• All of our teams had a multi-year APR rate above 940 for the third consecutive year
• This was the fourth consecutive year that all of our teams surpassed the 930 benchmark
• 9 teams posted a perfect 1000 single-year APR rate including volleyball, women's golf, men's cross country, women's cross country, women's gymnastics, women's rowing, softball, women's tennis, and women's track.
• 25 student-athletes were awarded the Mid-American Conference 2015-16 President's Award
• 82 student-athletes were awarded the Mid-American Conference 2015-16 Commissioner's Award
• 222 student-athletes were awarded the Mid-American Conference 2015-16 Honor Roll Award
• Baseball's Brennan Williams and Track's Willy Fink collected Capital One Academic All-District honors from the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA). Fink also went on to collect the Third Team Academic All-American accolades.
• During this academic year, EMU kicked off the Career Development Program to allow seniors an opportunity to obtain career development prior to graduation.
