EMU Student-Athletes Turn In Another Award Winning Season

YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) — It was another record-setting season in both athletics and academics for Eastern Michigan University student-athletes in 2015-16. Over the next three days EMUEagles.com will take a look back at all the awards and accomplishments on the field, in the classroom and throughout the community. Today's first installment reviews all the athletic achievements from the previous year.

The Eagles finished near the top in the battle for the Mid-American Conference all-sports championships. The women's athletic program turned in a runner-up showing in the race for the Jacoby Trophy, while the men's athletic program turned in a fourth-place finish in the battle for the Reese Trophy. It marked just the second time since 1999-2000 that Eastern Michigan placed inside the top-four spots in both standings. The other time occurred in 2013-14 when the Green and White were third on the women's side and fourth on the men's.

Coupled with six Mid-American Conference team titles and 34 individual MAC championships, the 2015-16 campaign was one of the most successful seasons in Eastern Michigan history. In the classroom, EMU student-athletes posted a 3.194 grade point average (GPA) during the winter semester, the second-highest mark on record. It was the 13th term in a row EMU student-athletes have earned over a 3.0 GPA.

Eastern Michigan became the first program since the University of Akron in 2005-06 to win the women's cross country, women's indoor track & field, and women's outdoor track & field championships all within one season. Overall, women's swimming & diving finished as the runner-up at the championships, while gymnastics was second in the regular season and captured the league's tournament title. On the men's side, the cross country team notched its 20th MAC title, while the men's swimming & diving team brought home its conference-leading 33rd championship.

For their efforts, 77 EMU student-athletes earned All-MAC honors (40 - first team, 32 - second team, two - third team, three - honorable mention) in 2015-16. Additionally, the conference office acknowledged EMU student-athletes on 51 different occasions for Player of the Week accolades in 19 of EMU's 21 sports.

Furthermore, 74 student-athletes were singled out as MAC Distinguished Scholar Student-Athletes with 178 earning Academic All-MAC accolades. Also, a total of 10 EMU standouts were selected for the prestigious weekly MAC Scholar-Athlete Award, which is given to just one male and one female student-athlete from nominees of all 12 league schools.

A complete list of 2015-16 awards and accomplishments is listed below..

Team/Individual Achievements
•   Finished as the runner-up for the Jacoby Trophy while placing fourth in the Reese Trophy standings. It marked just the second time since 1999-2000 that Eastern Michigan placed inside the top-four spots in both standings.
•   Overall, EMU captured six Mid-American Conference Championships, including men's cross country, women's cross country, women's indoor track & field, gymnastics, men's swimming & diving and women's outdoor track & field.
•   The men's indoor track & field, men's golf, women's swimming & diving and men's outdoor track & field teams all finished as the runner-up at the MAC Championships; gymnastics finished second in the regular season before winning the tournament title.
•   EMU won 33 individual MAC titles in track and swimming and sent 29 student-athletes on to the NCAAs.
• For their efforts, 75 EMU student-athletes earned All-MAC honors (38 - first team, 32 - second team, two - third team, three - honorable mention) in 2015-16.
•   The 75 All-MAC honorees were second-best in the MAC by three (Akron). The next closest school accumulated just 68
•   The conference office acknowledged EMU student-athletes on 51 different occasions for Player of the Week accolades in 19 of EMU's 20 conference sports.
• Six coaches were named MAC Coach of the Year. Sue Parks was named the MAC's Women's Cross Country, Women's Indoor Track Coach of the Year and the Women's Outdoor Track & Field Coach of the Year, while John Goodridge was named MAC Men's Cross Country Coach of the Year. Buck Smith was named the MAC's Men's Diving Coach of the Year and head coach Peter Linn was named MAC Men's Swimming Coach of the Year.
•   Six different student-athletes collected MAC Player of the Year honors, including Alsu Bogdanova (women's indoor track - most valuable performer), Anthony Jones (men's indoor track - most outstanding field performer), Tyler Brown (men's indoor track - most valuable performer), Andrew Henry (men's swimming - most outstanding swimmer), Alex Chan (men's diving - most outstanding diver) and Willy Fink (men's outdoor track - most valuable performer).
•   Jessica Harris (indoor & outdoor track freshman performer of the year) and Derek Ziegenfuss (outdoor field freshman of the year) also claimed conference accolades while gymnastics' Rachel Slocum was selected the MAC's Specialist of the Year.
•   Running back Darius Jackson was selected by the Dallas Cowboys in the sixth round of the 2016 NFL Draft. Jackson was the first player from Eastern to be selected into the NFL since T.J. Lang was chosen 109th overall by the Green Bay Packers in the 2009 draft. Jackson turned in one of the finest seasons in Eastern Michigan history in 2015, setting the school's single-season record with 16 touchdowns. He also became the first EMU tailback since Bronson Hill in 2013 to rush for more than 1,000 yards in a season and is just the 13th player in program history to do so.
•   The women's swimming & diving team closed out dual competition with a 6-1 record, highlighted by an unbeaten mark of 5-0 in conference duals. The unblemished MAC record marked the Eagles best since the 2012-13 season when EMU also posted a 5-0 ledger in conference duals. The season featured 90 first-place finishes, 57 second-place honors, and 58 third-place finishes. Additionally, the Eagles swept events 12 times during dual season, four of which came against conference opponents.
•   It was a banner year for the gymnastics team, including a sensational regular season. The team defeated Big Ten Conference opponent Maryland twice, while also tying Ohio State. Additionally, the Green and White compiled a MAC record of 5-1, which was the most MAC wins by the Eagles since 1997. As a team, the Eagles broke the team single meet record in three consecutive meets, culminating in the team's highest score ever. Additionally, the team qualified for Regionals for the first time while Rachel Slocum became just the second EMU gymnastics to compete in Nationals.
•   Freshman swimmer Delaney Duncan turned in one of the strongest campaigns in EMU history, ending the season at the NCAA Championships as the first freshman in Eastern Michigan laurels to qualify for nationals after winning the MAC title in the 100 Breastroke. At the NCAA meet, Duncan wrapped up All-American Honorable Mention status with a 14th-place finish.
•   Men's basketball standout James Thompson IV was named the MAC Freshman of the Year after averaging 14.8 points per game and a conference high 10.7 rebounds per game. He became just the second EMU student-athlete to earn the MAC's highest honor for a freshman men's basketball player. Thompson shot 64.5 percent from the floor which ranked in the top-10 in the NCAA in large part to the Baton Rouge, La. native tying a then-NCAA record of 26-straight field goal makes.
•   Redshirt freshman wrestler Dakota Juarez went 14-10 on the year. In the MAC Championships, he made two upsets as the No. 6 seed, over No. 3 seeded Austin Reese of Ohio, and two-time defending MAC champion No. 2 seeded Cooper Moore of Northern Iowa. He fell in the finals match, locking up second place and an automatic bid to the NCAA Championships. He was the first freshman to qualify for the NCAA's for Eastern since 1984.
•   Junior outfielder Michelle Kriegshauser reeled in Nation Fastpitch Coaches Association All-Region honors. Kriegshauser garnered second team recognition and was just the seventh player in program history to earn the award.
•   EMU Director of Sports Performance Ron McKeefery was selected the NSCA's College Strength and Conditioning Coach of the Year.
•   Baseball's Brennan Williams and Track's Willy Fink collected Capital One Academic All-District honors from the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA)
