Eagles Win Offensive Shootout Over Ball State, 16-10

5/7/2016 5:18:00 PM | Baseball

It tied the second most runs EMU has scored this season

MUNCIE, Ind. (EMUEagles.com) – The Eastern Michigan University baseball team came out on the right end of a slugfest in a 16-10 win over Ball State University, Saturday May 7 at Ball Diamond  It was tied for the second most runs scored for EMU this season, and was the third time the Eagles have scored double-digit runs in 2016.

EMU (18-26, 9-8 MAC) spread its 15 hits among all nine starters.  Five Eagles had multi-hit games, while three had three-RBI days.  Senior Mitchell McGeein (Calgary, Alberta-Vauxhall), junior John Montgomery (Anaheim Hills, Calif.-JSerra) and senior Tony DiLeo (Rockford, Mich.-Rockford) all had two-hit games with three runs driven in each.  McGeein's two hits were home runs, his team-best ninth and tenth of the season.  He now has 29 for his career.

Senior Austin Wilson (Valrico, Fla.-Bloomingdale Sr.) extended his 11-game hitting streak with three hits in the game.  Redshirt junior Marquise Gill (Paw Paw, Mich.-Paw Paw) scored four of EMU's runs, marking the first time an Eagle has done that since 2013.

On the mound, junior Matthew Beaton (Guelph, Ontario-Bishop Macdonnell Catholic) earned his second win of the season after pitching three innings in relief, striking out three.  Fellow junior Sam Delaplane (San Jose, Calif.-Leigh) tossed the final two innings of the game, only allowing one hit and striking out one as well.

Ball State (28-19, 13-7 MAC) took the initial lead in the first after a walk, single, and an error.  The lead was short lived as McGeein smacked his solo home run in the second, tying the game at one.

Five Ball State hits in the second inning turned into three runs, giving the Cardinals the 4-1 lead.  They tacked on another in the third, making it 5-1 into the fourth.

That's when the Eagles exploded for six runs, all which came with two outs.  Freshman Drake Lubin (Bloomfield Hills, Mich.-Walled Lake Northern) led things off with a single, stole second, and was balked to third.  Sophomore David Lett (Farmington Hills, Mich.-North Farmington) singled him in for the first run.  This was followed by a Wilson double, and then a Ball State error to plate another.  With Wilson on third, a wild pitch allowed him to score, cutting the deficit down to one.

The inning continued with a walk and hit by pitch, loading the bags.  This brought up Montgomery, who delivered in the clutch for the second straight game, singling in a pair of runners and giving EMU its first lead at 6-5.  After a pitching change, the final run of the inning came on a DiLeo double, setting up a two-run cushion for EMU after four innings.

The Cardinals got one back in the bottom of the fourth on a solo home run, but Eastern came back with another big inning in the fifth.

After a walk and a single, two runs came around to score on a throwing error by Ball State.  The inning continued with two outs, and a runner on third, when McGeein launched his second homer of the day, this time an opposite field jack, setting the Eagles up with an 11-6 advantage.

Ball State was not done yet, as they cut their deficit down to 11-9 in the bottom of the fifth with a three-run home run.  After the first scoreless inning in the sixth, Eastern tacked on another two runs in the seventh.

A single and hit by pitch put runners on first and second, setting up an RBI double from sophomore Brennan Williams (Commerce Township, Mich.-Walled Lake Northern).  Later in the seventh, with the bases juiced, Montgomery came through again with an RBI single, extending the EMU lead to 13-9.

The third Ball State home run of the afternoon put them in double digit runs.  The score sat at 13-10 after seven innings of play.  A balk in the eighth plated another run for EMU, giving them the 14-10 advantage with one inning to play.

Two more runs of insurance came around in the ninth with a two-out, two-RBI single from DiLeo, his second and third RBI's of the day.  With one more turn at-bat for Ball State, EMU held onto a 16-10 lead.  Delaplane wrapped up the game with his second straight scoreless inning, sealing the six-run victory.

Eastern wraps up the weekend with the rubber match against the Cardinals tomorrow, May 8.  First pitch from Ball Diamond is set for 1 p.m.
