Redshirt junior Marquise Gill hit his first career home run
MUNCIE, Ind. (EMUEagles.com) – The Eastern Michigan University baseball team could not hold on to an early lead, and Ball State University pulled away for an 8-3 defeat Sunday afternoon, May 8, at Ball Diamond. Eastern led 3-1 in the third before being shut out the rest of the way.
EMU (18-27, 9-9 MAC) had some highlights offensively, first from senior Austin Wilson (Valrico, Fla.-Bloomingdale Sr.). He extended his hitting streak to 12 games with a team-leading two hits, including a double. Junior John Montgomery (Anaheim Hills, Calif.-JSerra) had a pair of RBI's in the game, one on a walk and another on a single. He led EMU with seven RBI's on the weekend. Redshirt junior Marquise Gill (Paw Paw, Mich.-Paw Paw) had the other RBI for the Eagles, on his first career home run.
Despite taking the loss, starting pitcher freshman Tyler Butzin (Dearborn, Mich.-John F. Kennedy) struck out a career-best nine Ball State (29-19, 14-7 MAC) hitters. His previous best was five, which he accomplished twice. Fellow freshman Davis Feldman (Warren, Mich.-Brother Rice) also pitched 1.1 innings without giving up an earned run, striking out one.
Eastern started things off with a run in the first, manufacturing it with a bases loaded walk. After a lead-off double from Wilson, three straight base on balls gave EMU the early 1-0 lead. Ball State came back to tie in the second on a bases loaded sacrifice fly.
The Eagles captured their 3-1 lead in the third, first on Gill's solo shot, a home run to left field. Later in the inning, senior Mitchell McGeein (Calgary, Alberta-Vauxhall) singled, and advanced to third on an error by the centerfielder. The next batter, Montgomery, singled him in, giving EMU the 3-1 advantage.
Ball State chipped into the lead in the third with a run on back-to-back hits. The Cardinals took the lead for good in the fourth on a two-run home run.
Both teams went down almost completely in order until the seventh when BSU broke things open with three runs on two hits, as well as three walks and a hit by pitch, giving them the 7-3 advantage into the eighth.
Eastern got a pair of runners on in the eighth with two walks, but could not do anything with it. Ball State got the final run in the bottom of the eighth on an error after an attempted stolen base. Eastern went on to put runners on second and third in the ninth inning, but BSU closed things out for the 8-3 defeat.
Eastern will return to action this Tuesday, May 10, when it faces the Oakland University Golden Grizzlies for the third time this season in non-conference action. First pitch in Rochester is set for 3 p.m.
