Baseball Downed on the Road to No. 21 Michigan

EMU racked up 12 hits in the contest

ANN ARBOR, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) – The Eastern Michigan University baseball team could not overcome the high powered offense of the No. 21 University of Michigan Wolverines in a 12-4 defeat Tuesday evening, May 3.

Offensively, the Eagles thrived, collecting 12 hits as a team, marking the third time in the last four games EMU has had 10+ hits in a game.  EMU spread the 12 hits among nine batters.

Leading the way was sophomore Brennan Williams (Commerce Township, Mich.-Walled Lake Northern) who went 3-for-5.  It was his team-best 14th multi-hit game of the season and was also his third three-hit game and second in his last five.

Elsewhere senior Austin Wilson (Valrico, Fla.-Bloomingdale Sr.) extended his hitting streak to eight-games with a single and an RBI, while redshirt freshman Alex Wolanski (Naperville, Ill.-Neuqua Valley) notched his first career double while also knocking one in and scoring a run.

Following a quick scoreless first, the Wolverines snagged a run in the second after a pair of singles put runners on first and third.  A wild pitch with two outs allowed the runner on third to score, giving UM the early 1-0 lead after two.  They knocked in a pair more in the third on two hits, extending the lead to 3-0.

Michigan scored for the third consecutive inning in the fourth; plating four more runs on three hits and an error.  With the bases loaded and one out, the Eagles turned their second double play of the evening, keeping the score at 7-0 after four.

The bats came alive for EMU in the top of the fifth, knocking in a pair on three hits.  Freshman Drake Lubin (Bloomfield Hills, Mich.-Walled Lake Northern) drew the leadoff walk, setting up Wolanski for an RBI double down the left field line, getting EMU on the board.

After a sac bunt put Wolanski on third, he was driven in by a Wilson RBI single to right field, cutting UM's lead to 7-2.  After another single, from redshirt junior Marquise Gill (Paw Paw, Mich.-Paw Paw), Michigan went to the bullpen.  The reliever got out of the inning with no further damage, taking it to the bottom of the fifth.

The Eagles' reliever, sophomore Kyle Huckaby (Chandler, Ariz.-Perry), kept the five-run deficit in the fifth and sixth with scoreless innings, striking out two.  The Eagles got a golden opportunity in the seventh, loading the bases with one out on two hits and a walk, but UM escaped the jam without any damage, keeping the tally 7-2 into the stretch.  Huckaby struck out his third batter in the seventh in his third consecutive scoreless frame.

EMU loaded the bags up for the second consecutive inning in the eighth on back-to-back singles and a walk.  This time it was with no outs, allowing EMU to capitalize on the opportunity.  With two outs, junior John Montgomery (Anaheim Hills, Calif.-JSerra) delivered in the clutch with a two-run single to right, tightening the gap to 7-4 with one more at-bat coming for the Eagles.  It was the eighth time getting a hit as a pinch hitter for Montgomery this season.

Before the Eagles could come back up in the ninth though, Michigan put things away with a five-run inning in five hits, giving them a 12-4 lead into EMU's final turn at-bat.  Despite getting runners on the corners, UM finished things with a double play, sealing the 12-4 defeat.

Eastern gets back into action tomorrow when they host the Wolverines.  First pitch from Oestrike Stadium is set for 6 p.m.
