Eagles Fall in Pitchers Duel to Ohio State

5/17/2016 8:54:00 PM | Baseball

EMU only allowed four hits in the irst two innings

COLUMBUS, Ohio (EMUEagles.com) – The Eastern Michigan University baseball team fell just short in a pitcher duel to Ohio State University, 2-0, Tuesday evening at Bill Davis Stadium.  The Eagles (20-31) only gave up four hits in the first two innings, but couldn't break through on the scoreboard.

Two pitchers went the distance for EMU.  Sophomore Brent Mattson (Canton, Mich.-Canton) got the start and took the tough loss after going 5.1 innings, allowing a pair of runs on four hits while striking out three.  Freshman Caleb Hester (Coloma, Mich.-Coloma) went the rest of the way, 2.2 innings, only allowing one base runner and striking out two.

The Eagles collected three hits in the contest, with senior Jackson Martin (Listowel, Ontario-Listowel) getting one of the knocks, a double down the left field line in the third inning.

The Buckeyes scored their runs in the first with a pair of runs on a trio of hits, as well as some speed.  OSU stole three bags in the frame, and scored a pair on infield singles.  They did not hit a ball out of the infield in the inning.

Mattson settled down after the tough first inning, only allowing one hit in the next 4.1 innings, keeping the 2-0 score in the sixth.  Hester took over with one out in the sixth inning, keeping OSU off the board and maintaining the two-run deficit into the final three innings.

Hester took the reins the rest of the way, finishing what Mattson started, only allowing one base runner on a hit by pitch, and striking out two in his 2.2 innings of work.  With three outs to work with, EMU continued to trail 2-0.  They went three up, three down in the ninth, sealing the 2-0 defeat.

Eastern now sets its sights on the final weekend of Mid-American Conference play when they travel to Toledo for a three-game set against the University of Toledo.  First pitch of the series against the Rockets is set for 3 p.m. Thursday, May 19.
