YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) – With the regular season in the books, the Eastern Michigan University men's track and field team now turns its attention to the postseason, beginning this week, May 12-14, with the Mid-American Conference Championships in Toledo, Ohio. The Eagles will look to claim their third consecutive and MAC-leading 24th conference title in program history after winning the outdoor championships in both 2014 and 2015.
Last season at the MAC Championships, the Eagles won a total of six events, with a number of marks coming in as personal-bests, EMU records, or MAC records. Day two of the meet saw then-redshirt junior Solomon Simmons (Murrieta, Calif. – Murrieta Valley) take home the decathlon title with 7862 points, which was not only an EMU record, but also a new conference record by three points. Additionally, then-redshirt sophomore Willy Fink (Maumee, Ohio – Maumee), who was named Most Valuable Performer, claimed top-honors in the 3000m steeplechase, clocking in at 8:56.40 to win the race by nearly 20 seconds.
The third, and final day, was highlighted by four more individual titles for the Green and White. In the 400m dash, then-sophomore Tyler Brown (Findlay, Ohio – Findlay) defended his title from the previous season, winning the event with a time of 46.19 seconds. Fink also brought home another gold for the Eagles, winning the 5000m after crossing the finish line in 14:13.91. Eastern managed to claim the 4x100m title as well, as the lineup of Kevin Snead, Cameron Bolton, then-junior Matthew Williams (Moreno Valley, Calif. – Vista Del Lago), and Pedro Delgado set a program record with a time of 39.95 seconds. Finally, Donald Scott won the triple jump after posting a mark of 16.24 meters/ 53 feet 3.5-inches, which broke the MAC meet record.
The MAC Championships are slated to begin Thursday, May 12, at 10 a.m. with the women's hammer throw. The meet picks back up on Friday, May 13, with the second half of decathlon and heptathlon events at 10 a.m. Finally, the meet will conclude Saturday, May 14, beginning with the pole vault, discus throw, and high jump at 10 a.m. For more information on the conference championships, please click here.
