YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) –
The Eastern Michigan University baseball team couldn't quite complete the weekend sweep, falling in game three of the series, 3-2, to Central Michigan University, Sunday afternoon, May 1, at Oestrike Stadium.

Despite outhitting the Chippewas (12-32, 6-9 MAC) 10-8, the Eagles (17-23, 8-7 MAC) couldn't push enough runners around, marking the third time this season EMU has lost when outhitting their opponent.  EMU also fell to 6-4 in one-run contests this season.

EMU spread the 10 hits out among seven hitters.  Leading the Green and White was senior Austin Wilson (Valrico, Fla.-Bloomingdale Sr.) who extended his hitting streak to seven games with a 2-for-4 day.  He has three straight multi-hit games and four total over the streak.  Sophomore Brennan Williams (Commerce Township, Mich.-Walled Lake Northern) tallied his team-leading 13th multi-hit game of the season with a pair of singles.  His team-leading batting average now sits at .321 on the season.

A pair of freshman carried the day on the mound; with both tossing exceptionally well despite the loss.  Freshman Tyler Butzin (Dearborn, Mich.-John F. Kennedy) took the hard luck loss after going 6.1 innings without giving up an earned run, striking out three.  In relief, fellow freshman Davis Feldman (Warren, Mich.-Brother Rice) only yielded one hit in 2.2 innings of work, striking out a pair.

The Eagles jumped on the Chippewa starter in the first inning, plating a run on three hits.  After redshirt junior Marquise Gill (Paw Paw, Mich.-Paw Paw) reached on a fielder's choice, he stole his 31st bag of the season, putting him in scoring position.  The next batter, senior Mitchell McGeein (Calgary, Alberta-Vauxhall), smacked a single into center, scoring Gill and giving EMU the early 1-0 lead.

Butzin sailed through the first three innings, striking out three batters.  The rookie ran into trouble in the fourth when an error led off the inning, leading to three unearned runs later in the inning off of four hits.  Going into the bottom of the fourth, CMU had their first lead of the weekend, 3-1.

Back-to-back singles led off the bottom of the fourth for EMU, leading to a run later in the frame.  With the runners on first and third, junior Jeremy Stidham (Colorado Springs, Colo.-Sand Creek (Colby C.C.)) squeeze bunted the runner home, closing the gap to 3-2 through four.  Butzin went one-two-three in the top of the fifth, keeping the one run deficit.  He retired his seventh straight after another one-two-three in the sixth.

A leadoff single in the seventh and a sacrifice bunt forced EMU to go to the bullpen with a runner on second base and one out.  In relief, Feldman struck out the next two batters, getting out of the jam and keeping the score 3-2 into the stretch.

The rookie allowed a single in the seventh, but other than that was unscathed in the next two innings, keeping the one run deficit into the final turn at the plate for the Eagles in the ninth.    EMU couldn't get anyone on base in the inning though, sealing the 3-2 defeat.

Eastern returns to the diamond this Tuesday, May 3, with the second midweek contest of the season versus Washtenaw County rival the University of Michigan.  First pitch against the Wolverines in Ann Arbor is set for 6 p.m.
