EMU was unable to come away with a point in the loss
KALAMAZOO, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) -- The Eastern Michigan University tennis team traveled across the state to square off with in-state rival Western Michigan University Friday, April 8, in a Mid-American Conference dual match. The Eagles (3-14, 0-4 MAC) struggled against the Broncos (15-6, 4-1 MAC), as they fell, 7-0, without winning a match in Kalamazoo.
Western Michigan quickly jumped out to a 1-0 lead, securing the doubles point with wins at No. 1 and 2 doubles. Senior Klara Supejova (Prague, Czech Republic - Sportovni Gymnazium Klandno) and sophomore Andrea Martinovska (Plzn, Czech Republic - Sport and Management School) dropped the first match at No. 1, 6-4, to Tracy Kuhle and Melina Lyubomirova, before a 7-6 decision at No. 2 saw sophomore Ani Gogvadze (Tbilisi, Georgia - Khikhani) and freshman Marie Mayerova (Krmelin, Czech Republic) fall to Katja Fevralev and Barbare Eristavi. In the third doubles position, sophomore Anna Veleva (Sofia, Bulgaria) and sophomore Renu Sharma (Fardabad, India) were knotted up at 6-6 before the point was decided and the match went unfinished.
The Green and White did not fair well in singles action, as Martinovska was quickly dispatched, 6-2, 6-0, in the No. 2 spot by Kuhle, followed by a 6-2, 6-2, setback for Mayerova to Fevralev in the No. 4 spot. It was Eristavi who secured the victory for the Broncos by defeating EMU's Gogvadze at No. 3, 6-3, 6-4. Both Sharma and Supejova were able to take their competition to a third set tiebreaker, however neither were able to prevail as Eastern saw itself on the wrong end of the 7-0 decision.
"We need to get stronger mentally in every way," stated Head Coach Ryan Ray. "We left team point opportunities out there in doubles and singles. It's time to get tougher, and it starts with Bowling Green on Sunday."
EMU is back in action Sunday, April 10, when the Eagles travel to Bowling Green, Ohio to square off with Bowling Green State Unviersity. First serve is slated for 1 p.m. Sunday afternoon.
