YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) – The Eastern Michigan University tennis team dropped its third straight Sunday, April 3, when it hosted Ball State University at the Chippewa Racquet Club for a Mid-American Conference dual match. The Eagles (3-13, 0-3 MAC) dropped the doubles point and were able to salvage two of the five singles matches, falling, 5-2, to the Cardinals (16-2, 3-0).
In doubles action, the Eagles were unable to grab a point, dropping two-of-three matches. The No. 3 doubles team of Renu Sharma and Alejandra Barcelo Almoyna were first to fall, 6-1, to Ball State's Carmen Blanco and Bethany Moore. Despite fighting back from a two-game deficit, the No. 2 doubles squad of Ani Gogvadze and Marie Mayerova were on the wrong end of a 6-4 match to the Cardinals' Peyton Gollhofer and Audrey Berger. Klara Supejova and Andrea Martinovska were leading, 5-4, however their No. 1 doubles match went unfinished due to the point being decided.
Trailing 1-0 heading into singles action, the Eagles dropped the first decision of singles play as Martinovska fell, 6-2, 6-1, in the No. 2 position, giving the Cardinals a 2-0 lead with five remaining points to be decided. Barcelo then fell, 6-3, 6-4, in the No. 6 spot and Ball State extended its lead to three. Anna Veleva gave EMU its first point by taking down Isabelle Dohanics, 6-3, 6-4, in the No. 5 spot. At No. 4 singles, Mayerova split the first and second sets, before leading 3-0 in the third. Ball State's Audrey Berger came roaring back, rattling off six-straight games to clinch the match for the Cardinals. Supejova played a tough three set match with Gollhofer at No. 1 singles. After winning the first set, 6-4, and dropping the second, the third set went to a final tiebreaker where Supejova was able to set aside Gollhofer with a 7-2 decision, giving EMU its final point of the match.
"This was a heck of a battle today," remarked Head Coach Ryan Ray. "Ball State is a clutch team, that's why they are in first. Our fight is good. Again, we need to win more three setters to be successful. A little more could have gotten the job done today and we will work to get to that point."
The Eagles return to action Friday, April 8, for a MAC dual match with Western Michigan University. The Green and White will take on the Broncos in Kalamazoo, Mich. at 1 p.m.
