Eagles Overpower Falcons to Take Series Finale, 8-2

4/2/2016 3:25:00 PM | Softball

Olivia Clark and Michelle Kriegshauser each launched homers in the win

YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) – The Eastern Michigan University softball team closed out its three-game Mid-American Conference cross divisional series with Bowling Green State University Saturday, April 2, at Varsity Field. Playing through a mix of rain and snow with temperatures hovering around the 35-degree mark, the Eagles (13-19, 3-3 MAC) used two home runs to overpower the Falcons (14-21, 2-4 MAC), 8-2.

As a team, the Eagles tied a season-best with 13 hits. Four players registered multi-hit performances in the game to pace EMU. Freshman Olivia Logan (Riverview, Mich.-Riverview) finished 2-for-3 with a homer while freshman Amanda Akles (La Habra, Calif.-La Habra) also added a pair of hits, going 2-for-2 at the dish. Senior Aoife Duffy (Powell, Ohio-Olentangy Liberty) turned in a 2-for-4 performance and sophomore Brandice Olmos (Riverside, Calif.-Grand Terrace) added three hits in four at bats.

Freshman Nicolle Miranda (Wilminghton, Calif.-Port of Los Angeles) pitched a complete game in the circle for the Eagles on her way to her sixth win of the season. Miranda allowed two runs on six hits over seven innings while striking out four.

Miranda cruised through the first inning, sending the Falcons down in order in the opening frame to turn things over to the offense. Wasting little time, Logan belted the first pitch she saw over the fence in left for a one-out home run, her second of the season.

Leading 1-0, Miranda and the Eagles found themselves in a bit of a jam in the top of the second as the Falcons put two on with no outs. A groundout advanced runners to second and third before a sacrifice fly out in foul territory allowed a runner to tag and score, evening things at one. The freshman hurler limited the damage however, ending the frame with her first strikeout of the contest.

EMU regained the lead in the second and never relinquished it. A single by senior Abby Davidson (Westerville, Ohio-Olentangy Orange) set the table for Olmos. Making hard contact with a 1-1 offering, the Olmos liner whirled around in the wind before hitting the wall in right center for an RBI-double.  Bowling Green put a runner on in the third but Miranda came back to win a seven-pitch at bat, sending a Falcon down looking to bring the Eagles to the plate.

Akles drew a leadoff walk and Duffy singled to put two on for Davidson with just one away in the third for the Green and White. Davidson reached on a fielder's choice that brought in a run from third, settting the table for Olmos. Facing a 1-1 count again, Olmos repeated her previous success, driving a double to right center to put runners on second and third for sophomore Haley Hostetler (New Haven, Ind.-Woodlan). Taking the signs from third base coach Kim Burke, Hostetler squared around to bunt with Davidson charging home from third. Unable to make contact, Hostetler's bat frazzled the BGSU catcher as the Falcon backstop dropped the ball and Davidson slid in safely to push EMU's advantage to three, 4-1.

Bowling Green plated a run in the fourth but failed to get much more off of Miranda as the freshman righty held the Falcons to one hit over the next three innings. Meanwhile, EMU added insurance runs in the fourth and sixth to extend its lead to 8-2. An RBI-single by Akles scored senior Abi Clark (Clinton, Mich.-Clinton) who had reached on a double in the fourth before the Green and White tacked on three more in the sixth. Logan kick started the sixth with a double and Akles was plunked, putting two on with one out for junior Michelle Kriegshauser (New Lenox, Ill.-Lincoln Way Central). Looking for her first hit of the game, Kriegshauser crushed a 2-2 offering well over the fence in left center. With the homer, Kriegshauser has reached base safely in seven consecutive games. The three-run shot made the score 8-2 in favor of Eastern Michigan with Bowling Green coming to the bat rack for the final time.

Miranda used six pitches to retire the first two batters she faced in the seventh, inducing a groundout to shortstop and then coming back to ring up the second Falcon of the inning. An error and a walk gave the Falcons life but Miranda came back with her fourth K of the contest, securing the 8-2 win for the Eagles.

The Green and White close out its home stand with a doubleheader Tuesday, April 5, against MAC West Division foe, University of Toledo. First pitch against the Rockets is set for 1 p.m. at Varsity Field.
