The Eagles fell to 3-5 in MAC play with the losses
YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) – A hot start faded as the Eastern Michigan University softball team was swept by the University of Toledo, April 5, at Varsity Field in Mid-American Confernce play. The Eagles (13-21, 3-5 MAC) led by as many as three in game one before being upended, 7-6, and then dropped game two, 9-0, in five innings.
Three Eagles recorded multi-hit games in first leg of the doubleheader. Junior Michelle Kriegshauser (New Lenox, Ill.-Lincoln Way Central) paced the Eagles, going 3-for-4 with two RBI's while sophomore Haley Hostetler (New Haven, Ind.-Woodlan) and senior Abi Clark (Clinton, Mich.-Clinton) each added two hits and a run in the loss.
In the circle, freshman Nicolle Miranda (Wilmington, Calif.-Port of Los Angeles) dropped to 6-13 on the season. The freshman hurler tossed 6.0 innings, allowing three earned runs while striking out four in game one. Junior Abbie Minsker (Howell, Mich.-Hartland) fell to 5-5 as the pitcher of record in game two. Sophomore Trisha Trujillo (Whittier, Calif.-California) registered appearances in each game, fanning three over 3.2 innings of work.
Game #1: Toledo 7, Eastern Michigan 6
Eastern jumped on UT's Maria Gooding early, tagging her for five hits and three runs in the first two frames. A two-out rally plated two in the first as Clark, freshman Amanda Akles (La Habra, Calif.-La Habra), Kriegshauser, and senior Abby Davidson (Westerville, Ohio-Olentangy Orange) ripped four consecutive singles. The Eagles then added another run in the second, following a leadoff single Haley Hostetler.
The Rockets (8-25, 3-5 MAC) registered their first base runner of the game in the third, courtesy of a leadoff walk but Miranda battled back, stranding two and maintaining EMU's 3-0 lead.
The Green and White's three-run edge stood until the fifth when UT pulled within one, 3-2. The Rockets scored one before a walk brought about a pitching change for the Eagles. Entering in relief, Trujillo induced a pair of ground balls limiting Toledo's damage and keeping the Eagles in front.
Eastern Michigan responded in the bottom of the fifth, tacking on two to move its lead back to three. Freshman Olivia Logan (Riverview, Mich.-Riverview) singled to start the Eagles' fifth before Kriegshauser's RBI double capped the two-run inning for the Eagles. Through five complete, EMU led 5-2.
The Eagles' lead was short lived as Toledo answered with three runs of its own in the sixth, evening the score at five. A scoreless sixth for the Eagles was followed by a two-run seventh for the Rockets, giving them their first lead of the game, 7-5, with EMU coming to bat for the final time.
A two-out double by Clark was followed by a walk and an RBI-single by Kriegshauser, pulling EMU within one, 7-6, before a groundout sealed the loss.
Game #2: Toledo 9, Eastern Michigan 0
The Eagles mustered just two hits off of UT's Heather Webb and failed to plate a run in the second leg of the doubleheader. Logan and sophomore Brandice Olmos (Riverside, Calif.-Grand Terrace) collected a hit apiece while UT's offense recorded nine runs on nine hits to take game two, 9-0, in five innings.
Eastern Michigan continues conference play this weekend, April 8-9, in Kent, Ohio where the Green and White will battle the Golden Flashes of Kent State University. The three-game series opens Friday, April 8, with a 3 p.m. first pitch.
