Rowing Captures Second Straight Harvey Cup

The Eagles also took victory in four of six races on the day

FAIRFAX STATION, Va. (EMUEagles.com) – The Eastern Michigan University crew team captured its second consecutive Harvey Cup, by taking two out of three races from the University at Buffalo at the George Mason Invite, Sunday April 17.  EMU also claimed victory in four of its six races on the day.

The victory marks the fourth Harvey Cup in program history.  The Harvey Cup is named in recognition and memory of the University at Buffalo's former Associate Athletic Director and Senior Woman Administrator Nan Harvey, who passed away in September of 2003 after courageously battling cancer for over three years.  EMU and Buffalo are the only Mid-American Conference institutions to sponsor rowing as a varsity sport. As a result, both joined the Colonial Athletic Association beginning in the 2012-13 season to compete for a league title and both race each season to determine the unofficial "MAC Champion."

"George Mason was incredibly generous to allow Buffalo and EMU to race for the Harvey Cup as part of their invite," Head Coach Kemp Savage explained.  "We raced really well against Buffalo, all three boats raced really well in some tight races.  Winning the Harvey Cup two years in a row really speaks to the progress the team has made."

The day began with a Varsity 8 race between the Eagles and Bulls.  EMU edged out UB by just over two seconds with a time of 6:55.1 to capture the Harvey Cup.  The second Varsity 8 boat edged out Buffalo with a time of 7:02.7, coming in 1.4 seconds better.  Buffalo got a little revenge in the Varsity 4 race, finishing four seconds behind with a time of 8:05.5.

In the afternoon, EMU went head-to-head with the host Patriots in a trio of races.  Delaware also participated in the Varsity 4 race.  Leading off was the first Varsity 8 boat who finished with a 7:04.6 time, around six seconds behind GMU.  Eastern battled back in the second Varsity 8 race, destroying George Mason with a time of 7:08.2, almost 33 seconds ahead of the Patriots.  The day ended with EMU's fourth win, taking first in the Varsity 4 race with a time of 8:14.2, finishing ahead of UD by about five seconds and GMU by about 18 seconds.

"We had some inconsistency in the 1V8 in the afternoon race, but the 2V8 and the V4 really stepped up for some great wins against George Mason," Savage said.  "We are looking forward to practice the next two weeks to refine our speed."

Before the Sunday races, EMU scrimmaged Bucknell University, Saturday, April 16.  While results were not calculated, it served as a useful tune up for the GMU Invite.

"It was great of Bucknell to host us for a competitive scrimmage," Savage said.  "It really worked out well to get some practice pieces in with a fast team before an important race."

Eastern now has a couple weeks off before getting back into action at the MACRA Regatta, Sunday, May 1.  The all-day affair will take place in Cincinnati, Ohio.
