The game was tied from the third until the eighth inning
YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) – The Eastern Michigan University baseball team dropped game two of the series in late innings by a score of 4-2 to Kent State University in Mid-American Conference action Saturday afternoon, April 15 at Oestrike Stadium. The game was tied from the third until the eighth, when the Golden Flashes (25-10, 8-3 MAC) struck for a pair on Eagle (13-19, 5-3 MAC) miscues.
Despite the loss, the pitching staff was the star of the game for EMU. Starter senior Augie Gallardo (Hemet, Calif.-Hemet (Mt. San Jacinto College) took a no decision after pitching six innings, only giving up one earned run while striking out three. Fellow senior Michael Marsinek (Streetsboro, Ohio-Walsh Jesuit) took the hard-luck loss after giving up a pair of unearned runs in the eighth. He has not allowed an earned run in his last nine appearances, totaling 16.2 innings. Junior Matthew Beaton (Guelph, Ontario-Bishop Macdonnell Catholic) also pitched a scoreless 0.2 innings, striking out one.
On offense, EMU and KSU tied for nine hits, marking the sixth time this season Eastern has lost when tying or out-hitting an opponent. Leading the way was freshman Max Schuemann (Portage, Mich.-Portage Northern) who had a 2-for-4 day with an RBI. Redshirt junior Marquise Gill (Paw Paw, Mich.-Paw Paw) also had two hits including a double, while stealing his conference leading 29th base of the year.
The Flashes struck first for the second straight game, smacking three hits in a row to plate a run. Gallardo stranded a pair on the bases though, keeping the score 1-0.
After a seven pitch second for Gallardo, EMU rallied back in the bottom of the second with a pair of runs on three hits. Senior Jackson Martin (Listowel, Ontario-Listowel) and redshirt junior Michael Mioduszewski (Dexter, Mich.-Dexter) went back to back with singles, and a double steal set up the RBI groundout for Schuemann. With two outs, freshman Drake Lubin (West Bloomfield, Mich.-Walled Lake Northern) knocked in his first career runner with a single up the middle, giving Eastern the 2-1 lead after two.
An Eagle miscue gave the lead up in the third. After getting the first two outs quickly, a hit batter and walk put runners on first and second. A wild pitch advanced the runner to third, and then a throwing error on a pickoff to third scored the run, tying the score at two each.
That's when both starters locked in over the next three innings, as both went unscathed in the fourth, fifth and sixth, keeping the 2-2 tie into the seventh. Gallardo exited in the seventh, giving way to Marsinek, who sent the Flashes down to get to the stretch still at 2-2. Despite getting a runner to second in the seventh, he was stranded leaving the score as is.
Kent State broke through in the eighth with a pair of unearned runs that scored with two outs in the inning. After getting the first two batters out easily, a walk, hit batter and an error loaded the bags up, setting up the two-run single from Kent to give them the 4-2 lead going to the bottom of the eighth.
The Eagles landed a golden opportunity in the frame, getting the first three two batters on a walk and hit by pitch. After back-to-back strikeouts, an infield single loaded the bags with two outs, but a harmless fly out ended the threat.
In the ninth, Beaton dispatched the KSU hitters without further harm, allowing EMU the opportunity to tie or win it in the ninth. Despite getting the leadoff man on, a double play and strikeout ended the game with the 4-2 score.
The series between EMU and KSU wraps up tomorrow with game three from Oestrike Stadium. First pitch is set for 1 p.m.
