Home Runs the Difference in Series Finale Defeat

4/17/2016 3:45:00 PM | Baseball

The Flashes used three home runs to complete the sweep

YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) – The Eastern Michigan University baseball team dropped its third consecutive game against Kent State University with a 7-3 defeat at Oestrike Stadium, Sunday afternoon, April 17, in Mid-American Conference action. The Flashes (26-10, 9-3 MAC) used the strength of three home runs to complete the weekend sweep.

Highlighting the day on offense for EMU (13-20, 5-4 MAC) was senior Mitchell McGeein (Calgary, Alberta-Vauxhall) who cranked his fifth home run of the season, a solo shot.  It was also his 24th of his EMU career, which moved him up in a tie for 12th place on the all-time list.

Two quick scoreless innings from freshman starting pitcher Tyler Butzin (Dearborn, Mich.-John F. Kennedy) kept it 0-0 into the third.  The rookie struck out three in the first two frames.  In the third, KSU broke the shut out with a two-run home run to straight away centerfield.  It was the first earned runs Butzin had allowed in his last 30 innings pitched.

EMU responded with one in the bottom of the third on their first hit of the afternoon.  After a freshman Drake Lubin (West Bloomfield, Mich.-Walled Lake Northern) walk and steal, redshirt junior Marquise Gill (Paw Paw, Mich.-Paw Paw) smacked a line drive to right center, scoring the freshman and cutting the KSU lead to 2-1 after three.

Another home run from Kent State, this time a solo shot, helped them to regain the two-run advantage in the top of the fifth.  They notched a pair more in the sixth with a two-out, two-run base hit, extending the advantage to 5-1.

The Eagles used the long ball themselves in the bottom of the sixth when McGeein smacked his fifth of the season, a solo homer to left field, cutting KSU's lead to 5-2.  The Flashes answered right back though with their third long ball of the afternoon in the seventh, putting the lead back at 6-2 going into the stretch.

After a scoreless eighth, KSU tacked on one more insurance run in the top of the ninth inning on a sacrifice fly.  The Eagles got the run back in the bottom half with an RBI single from sophomore Brennan Williams (Commerce Township, Mich.-Walled Lake Northern) who entered as a pinch hitter, but it was not enough as KSU finished off the 7-3 decision.

Eastern now has the week off to focus on finals before getting back on the road for a three-game weekend set versus Western Michigan University.  The series begins Friday, April 22 with a 3 p.m. first pitch in Kalamazoo.
