Baseball Falls in Weekend Opener at WMU

4/22/2016 6:02:00 PM | Baseball

Senior Austin Wilson went 2-for-3 on the day

KALAMAZOO, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) – The Eastern Michigan University baseball team dropped game one of the weekend series versus Western Michigan University, 6-2, Friday afternoon at Hyames Field.  The Eagles (13-21, 5-5 MAC) couldn't overcome an early deficit and despite getting the tying run at the plate in the eighth, couldn't break through in the end.

Making his first start since April 30, 2014, senior Michael Marsinek (Streetsboro, Ohio- Walsh Jesuit) went a career-high 5.1 innings, striking out five, which tied a career high, and only yielded one earned run.  He took the tough loss, though, after the Eagles couldn't battle back in the late innings.

Offensively, senior Austin Wilson (Valrico, Fla.-Bloomingdale Sr.) led EMU with a 2-for-3 day including a double and an RBI.  Redshirt junior Marquise Gill (Paw Paw, Mich.-Paw Paw) also went for two hits in a 2-for-4 day.

Both pitchers battled to combine to only allow three hits through three innings before Marsinek ran into trouble in the fourth.

After a walk, WMU (10-24, 3-7 MAC) clubbed an RBI double to give them the first runs of the ballgame.  After an error put runners on second and third, back-to-back singles pushed two more across, giving the Broncos a 3-0 advantage after four.

Eastern finally broke through in the seventh, manufacturing a run on no hits.  Following a senior Jackson Martin (Listowel,Ontario-Listowel) walk, he was balked to second and advanced to third on a wild pitch.  He would then be driven home by a redshirt junior Michael Mioduszewski (Dexter, Mich.-Dexter) sacrifice fly, putting the score at 3-1 going into the stretch.

The Broncos got the run and then some right back though, plating three in the bottom of the seventh on a pair of wild pitches and an infield single, giving WMU a 6-1 advantage into the final two innings.

Things got off to a good start in the top of the eighth for Eastern, as they quickly plated a run on back-to-back doubles from junior Jeremy Stidham (Colorado Springs, Colo.-Sand Creek (Colby C.C.)) and Wilson, knocking WMU starter Keegan Akin from the contest, and making the score 6-2.  After back-to-back walks, the bags were loaded up with no outs, but a strikeout and double play left the deficit at four.

Following a scoreless eighth from junior Matthew Beaton (Guelph, Ontario-Bishop Macdonnell Catholic), the Eagles had one last go in the top of the ninth.  EMU went down in order though, sealing the 6-2 defeat.

Eastern gets back in action with game two of the series tomorrow in Kalamazoo.  First pitch against the Broncos is set for 1 p.m.
