EMU tied, then lost in the eighth inning
Starting pitcher senior Augie Gallardo (Hemet, Calif.-Hemet (Mt. San Jacinto College) made a quality start in a no decision, going a career-high seven innings and only giving up three earned runs while striking out seven. The righty now has a team-leading 45 K's on the season.
Offensively senior Mitchell McGeein (Calgary, Alberta-Vauxhall) led the way with a 2-for-4 day including his sixth home run on the season, as well as a double, while also drawing a walk. Redshirt junior Michael Mioduszewski (Dexter, Mich.-Dexter) plated a pair of runs on a double, while sophomore Brennan Williams (Commerce Township, Mich.-Walled Lake Northern) earned his team-leading 11th multi-hit game of the season with a pair of singles.
The Eagles were the first on the board in a big way in the top of the first. After a pair of quick groundouts, McGeein launched his team-lead tying sixth homer of the season to deep left field, giving Eastern the 1-0 lead early on. It was also the 25th home run of McGeein's career, putting him in a tie for 11th place on the all-time EMU list.
A Western (11-24, 4-7 MAC) miscue in the second led to another run for EMU. After senior Jackson Martin (Listowel, Ontario-Listowel) led off by getting on with an error, he stole second and then scored on back-to-back groundouts, the second being an RBI by senior Austin Wilson (Valrico, Fla.-Bloomingdale Sr.).
A run was given back in the bottom of the third on a bases loaded wild pitch, tightening the score to 2-1. Despite that, Gallardo got through the first three without further damage, while striking out three.
The Broncos jumped ahead in the fourth on an Eagle miscue. With runners on first and second, a single to second was going to have the bags loaded, but a throwing error on the play to first allowed a runner to score, tying the game. The next batter plated a run on an RBI groundout, giving WMU a 3-2 lead after four.
The senior righty ran into more trouble in the fifth, putting a pair of runners on second and third with one out, but the veteran battled back, striking out the final two hitters to maintain the one-run deficit into the sixth. Gallardo cruised through the sixth, going one-two-three to keep it 3-2 into the seventh.
Despite getting through the seventh to set a career-high in innings pitched, Gallardo yielded another run on a two-out RBI double, doubling the Bronco lead to 4-2 going into the eighth.
The Eagles finally broke through in the eighth with a pair of runs to tie the game. After a single and walk, Mioduszewski ripped a two-run double to the gap in right center, tying the game at four apiece.
WMU answered immediately in the eighth though with three runs on three hits, giving WMU a 7-4 advantage into the ninth. Despite getting a couple guys on, WMU closed the door for the three-run defeat.
The weekend series wraps up tomorrow with game three from Hyames Field. First pitch versus WMU is set for 1 p.m.
