Eagles Conclude Weekend With 5-3 11th Inning Win

Eastern won its second extra inning game of the season

KALAMAZOO, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) – The Eastern Michigan University baseball team wrapped up the weekend with a thrilling 5-3 win in extra innings over Mid-American Conference rival Western  Michigan Sunday afternoon, April 24 at Hyames Field.  The Eagles (14-22, 6-6 MAC) sprung for two runs in the 11th inning for their second extra inning win of the season.

The pitching, especially in the late innings, carried the day for EMU in the contest.  Junior Sam Delaplane (San Jose, Calif.-Leigh) claimed his team-leading fourth win of the season after going three sturdy innings in relief, only allowing three hits while striking out three as well.  It was the tenth win of his EMU career.

Equally as impressive on the bump was reliever Matthew Beaton (Guelph, Ontario-Bishop Macdonnell Catholic), who pitched 2.1 innings while striking out three himself.

Offensively, senior Mitchell McGeein (Calgary, Alberta-Vauxhall) was the star of the afternoon after clubbing his seventh home run of the season in a 2-for-4 day.  It was the 26th of his career, putting him in a tie for 9th on the all-time list.  It was also his 100th career RBI, making him just the 24th Eagle to reach the 100-RBI plateau.  Redshirt junior Marquise Gill (Paw Paw, Mich.-Paw Paw) also had a 2-for-4 day, including scoring the winning run in the 11th.

After a quick scoreless first, WMU was first on the scoreboard in the second after a squeeze bunt plated a run, giving the Broncos the early 1-0 lead after two innings.  They doubled the lead in the third with a single and double, putting WMU ahead 2-0 after three.

The Eagles' bats came alive in the fourth with explosive hitting for a pair of runs.  McGeein led off with a high and long home run to left field, putting EMU on the board.  On the very next pitch, sophomore Brennan Williams (Commerce Township, Mich.-Walled Lake Northern) deposited his second home run of the season just over the fence in right field, tying the game at two.  It was the first time EMU went back-to-back since doing so April 14, 2012, versus Central Michigan.

EMU gave away the lead in the fifth after a single turned into an unearned run.  After a failed pick-off attempt, the runner advanced to third, and scored on a wild pitch, making the score 3-2 in favor of the Broncos after five innings.

Eastern got the run back in the seventh, manufacturing a run on one hit.  Junior Jeremy Stidham (Colorado Springs, Colo.-Sand Creek (Colby C.C.)) led off with a bunt single, and promptly stole second.  After back-to-back fly outs, Stidham scored on the second, tying the game at three going into the stretch.

Despite each team getting multiple runners on base in the seventh, eighth and ninth, both defenses held strong, forcing extra innings for the third time in the 2016 season.

Another quick inning in the tenth for EMU led to the bottom half of the frame where the Eagles ran into some steep trouble.  WMU first got runners on first and second with one out, before Delaplane struck out the next hitter.  A walk loaded the bases, but Delaplane battled back striking out the final hitter, sending it to the 11th.

The Eagles found some magic in the 11th frame, going for two runs on a pair of hits and a Bronco error.  Gill led off with his first hit of the game, and after a hit by pitch, runners stood at first and second.

From there, WMU tried a pick-off to first that was thrown away, scoring Gill from second and putting McGeein on third.  The next batter, freshman Max Schuemann (Portage, Mich.-Portage Northern), knocked in the insurance run with a bloop single to right, giving EMU the 5-3 advantage into the bottom of the 11th.

Heading out for his third straight inning, Delaplane allowed a lead-off single, but he battled back to get the next three hitters, sealing the 5-3 win.

Eastern will remain on the road this week for a single mid-week game versus the University Notre Dame, Wednesday, April 27.  First pitch from South Bend is set for 6 p.m.
