Rowing Prepared for Weekend on East Coast

The Eagles will scrimmage Bucknell on Saturday before going to the George Mason Invite

YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) - The Eastern Michigan University rowing team gets back on the water this weekend with a pair of meets on the East Coast, Saturday-Sunday, April 16-17. The Eagles will scrimmage Bucknell University, April 16, before heading down to Virginia for the George Mason Invite, April 17.
The Eagles will square off with the Bison's in 4x 3:30 pieces, beginning at 7:15 a.m. The races will take place on the Susquehanna River in Shamokin Dam, Pa. Eastern will race three Varsity 8 boats throughout the day versus Bucknell.
"Scrimmaging Bucknell on Saturday morning is a good warm-up to race Buffalo for the Harvey Cup on Sunday morning," Head Coach Kemp Savage said. "It is a good way to see some competition in our region."
Following the scrimmage, EMU then jumps down to Virginia for the George Mason Invite, Sunday, April 17. There, the Eagles will battle the University at Buffalo for the 11th annual Harvey Cup. Eastern will look to defend its title from the Bulls after taking its third Harvey Cup last season. EMU and UB will race three times, with two Varsity 8 boats and one Varsity 4 boat set to hit the water.
The Harvey Cup is named in recognition and memory of the University at Buffalo's former Associate Athletic Director and Senior Woman Administrator Nan Harvey, who passed away in September of 2003 after courageously battling cancer for over three years. EMU and Buffalo are the only Mid-American Conference institutions to sponsor rowing as a varsity sport. As a result, both joined the Colonial Athletic Association in the 2012-13 season to compete for a league title.
Following the battle with the Bulls, EMU will square off with host George Mason in three races, two Varsity 8 and one Varsity 4 race. Racing between the Eagles and Patriots is set to begin at noon.
"After our success last weekend against some good D-I competition, I am looking forward to racing for the Harvey Cup with Buffalo on Sunday morning, as well as going head to head with George Mason on Sunday afternoon," Savage explained. "I am really looking forward to testing our speed against competition on the East Coast."
