YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) – The Eastern Michigan University tennis team welcomed the University of Toledo to the Claudia Wasik Tennis Complex Friday, April 15, for the Green and White's final home match of the 2016 campaign. The Eagles (4-15, 1-5 MAC) fell, 4-3, in a hard fought Mid-American Conference battle where four-of-six singles matches went three sets. Despite winning the doubles point, EMU was unable to withstand the Rockets (9-11, 3-4 MAC) offense in singles. The match served as EMU's Senior Day where the lone senior, Klara Supejova was honored for her four-year career in Ypsilanti.
The Eagles jumped out to a quick 1-0 lead following doubles play. The No. 1 doubles squad of Andrea Martinovska and Supejova fell behind, 1-0, in their match but rattled off six-straight games to take their match, 6-1, defeating Sidnay Huck and Emily Mazzola. The No. 3 doubles team sealed the deal for Eastern, as Renu Sharma and Anna Veleva came away with a 6-1 victory over Megan Miller and Lauren Thai. With a lead of 4-3 at No. 2 doubles, Ani Gogvadze and Marie Mayerova's match went unfinished due to the doubles point being decided.
Supejova was first to fall in singles play, dropping a 6-3, 6-4, decision to Huck in the No. 1 position, which knotted up the score at one point apiece. Veleva quickly answered in the No. 4 slot with a 6-1, 6-1, victory over Miller to give EMU another one-point advantage, 2-1. Following the end of the first two matches, it was over an hour until another point was decided as all four of the remaining singles matches went three sets.
Next to score was Toledo, tying up the match at two. UT's Caroline Aleck took down Mayerova at No. 5, 2-6, 6-4, 6-1. Mazzola took down Gogvadze at No. 3 to give Toledo its first lead of the match. After dropping the opening set, 6-2, Gogvadze came back to take set two, 7-6, but fell in the finale, 7-5. Just minutes after that match completed, Martinovska came back to win No. 2 singles, 6-7, 6-3, 6-2, leaving it up to the No. 6 singles match to decide the final point. Thai came away victorious in that contest, defeating Sharma, 7-6, 2-6, 6-3, giving UT the victory.
"We continue to struggle to put teams away," remarked Head Coach Ryan Ray. "This loss hurts us the most. Mentally, we are not playing strong enough to finish. We haven't been able to make that transition. We need to keep our head up and finish the season strong."
Eastern continues the MAC slate Sunday, April 17, when it travels to Oxford, Ohio to square off with reigning MAC Regular Season and Tournament Champions, Miami University. First serve is slated for 1 p.m. on Sunday afternoon.
