Eagles Fall to the Golden Flashes in Weekend Opener
4/15/2016 9:29:00 PM | Baseball
Junior Justin Thompson struck out six in his EMU debut
Highlighting the day offensively were redshirt junior Michael Mioduszewski (Dexter, Mich.-Dexter) and junior Jeremy Stidham (Colorado Springs, Colo.-Sand Creek (Colby C.C.)). Mioduszewski clubbed his fifth home run of the season, while Stidham smacked his team-leading fourth triple of the year.
On the mound, junior Justin Thompson (Canton, Mich.-Plymouth (Concordia)) made a stellar EMU debut going 4.2 innings in relief only allowing two earned runs, while striking out six batters. He only gave up four hits as well.
The Flashes (24-10, 7-3 MAC) ambushed the Eagles early, notching three straight hits to take a 1-0 lead. An error and another hit made the tally 2-0, but a slick play from senior Jackson Martin (Listowel, Ontario-Listowel), making his first start of the season at 1st base, on a liner, turned into an unassisted double play, and cooled Kent down to get EMU out of the inning without further damage.
EMU got through the second and third unscathed before Kent exploded for four more runs in the fourth on five hits, extending the lead to 6-0 after four. The lead ballooned to 11-0 in the fifth with five more runs on just two hits, but five walks.
The Eagles notched their first hit of the contest in the bottom of the fifth, a single up the middle from Martin. A double play erased any potential threat in the inning, keeping the score 11-0 after five.
After a scoreless sixth for Kent, EMU finally got on the board in the sixth with a run on a pair of KSU errors. After a redshirt junior Marquise Gill (Paw Paw, Mich.-Paw Paw) single and steal of second, his 28th of the season, he went to third after an error. After a second consecutive error, Gill scored, getting EMU on the board. The Flashes immediately responded with a pair in the seventh on a two-run home run, putting KSU's lead at 13-1 going into the stretch.
The Eagles tacked on two more in the late innings. In the seventh Mioduszewski smacked his fifth home run of the season, which was a bomb to left field. Through seven innings, the score remained in Kent's favor 13-2. EMU got one more in the eighth after a triple from Stidham and a passed ball. The triple was his team-leading fourth of the season, and second in as many games. An uneventful ninth wrapped up the game with the 13-3 final.
Game two of the series between Eastern Michigan and Kent State is set for a 3 p.m. first pitch from Oestrike Stadium tomorrow, April 16.
