Baseball Unable to Fend off High-Powered Sun Devils

3/4/2016 11:48:00 PM | Baseball

The Eagles racked up 14 hits on the night

PHOENIX, Ariz. (EMUEagles.com) – An offensive hitting clinic from the Eastern Michigan University baseball team was not enough to defeat a high-powered Arizona State University team in a 12-4 loss Friday night at Phoenix Municipal Stadium.

Eastern (4-6) racked up 14 hits on the night, their second most this season.  They out-hit the Sun Devils (6-4) by one, 14-13.  The hits only turned into four runs though as they left 10 men on base, their second highest total this season as well.

Five Eagles finished with two-hit games, led by senior Jackson Martin (Listowel, Ontario-Listowel) who knocked in a run on a double and triple, and scored two runs.  Junior Jeremy Stidham (Colorado Springs, Colo.-Sand Creek (Colby C.C.)) collected a pair of doubles on the night and also scored a run.

The Eagles threatened in the first, getting two hitters on with a pair of singles, but the Sun Devils got out of the jam with a caught stealing on a double steal.  ASU got on the board themselves in the bottom half of the frame with an RBI single after back-to-back walks.  Starting pitcher junior Sam Delaplane (San Jose, Calif.-Leigh) tightened up though, striking out two batters and getting out of the inning without further damage.

In the second inning, EMU answered right back after Martin crushed a double off the top of the wall, and was promptly driven in on a base hit to left from senior Austin Wilson (Valrico, Fla.-Bloomingdale Sr.).  It was ASU starting pitcher Seth Martinez's first earned run allowed this season in 13 innings pitched.  Despite another double from Stidham, EMU left a pair on base.  The game went tied 1-1 into the bottom of the second.  In two innings, Eastern had racked up five early hits.

A quick second for Delaplane led to the third where EMU threatened once again.  The first three batters reached on a trio of singles, but all three ended up stranded after Martinez got the next three hitters out.  In the bottom half of the third, Delaplane struck out two more batters for an easy inning.  After three the score remained 1-1 despite the Eagles out-hitting ASU 8-1.

The tie was broken in the bottom of the fourth when ASU tagged Delaplane for a run.  Despite getting the first two outs, back-to-back hits, a single and double, gave the Sun Devils the lead back, 2-1, after four.  The lead extended to 4-1 after five when ASU knocked in the runs on three hits.  Despite out-hitting ASU 8-6 after five, the Sun Devils led 4-1 going into the sixth.

In the sixth, Martinez retired his 11th straight batter, leaving two outs for Wilson.  The senior launched a triple in the gap, but was cut off at home after a long throw was relayed home in time for the putout.  For the third straight inning, ASU put runs on the board, this time it was a back-breaking four runs, putting the home club up by a commanding 8-1 lead after six.

EMU chipped away at the lead in the seventh, with Stidham leading off with his second double of the game.  He came around to score on a redshirt junior Marquise Gill (Paw Paw, Mich.-Paw Paw) RBI single, getting the score down to 8-2.  The ASU reliever escaped the inning without any further damage.  After a two-strikeout inning from lefty reliever Michael Marsinek (Streetsboro, Ohio-Streetsboro) the score remained the same going to the eighth.

The Eagles got a couple more in the eighth on a pair of hits.  A senior Mitchell McGeein (Calgary, Alberta-Vauxhall) walk led to him being driven in by a Martin triple, his second extra base hit of the night.  Martin came around on a RBI single from sophomore Luke DeVenney (Des Moines, Iowa-Dowling Catholic), the first of his career, tightening the deficit to 8-4.  The Green and White went on to load the bases, but ASU's closer was able shut things down, keeping the score put after eight turns for EMU.

ASU would go on to put the game away in the bottom of the eighth, putting up four runs, to seal the 12-4 victory.

Game two of the three-game series is set to begin at 6:30 p.m. MT again tomorrow from Phoenix Municipal Stadium.
