ATLANTA (EMUEagles.com) - An outstanding performance by senior swimmer Andrew Henry (Garner, N.C.-West Johnston) and a sensational showing by freshman diver Tom Gillis (Halifax, Nova Scotia-Citadel) on the springboard rounded out the Eastern Michigan University men's swimming and diving team's second day of competition at the NCAA Championships Friday, March 25.
Swimming the second fastest time in school history, just six-tenths off his own school record, Henry clocked in with a time of 1:34.87. The Garner, N.C. product's time fell a hair over five-tenths short of earning a lane in the consolation race and earning All-American Honorable Mention honors, ultimately placing 22nd. Henry's 22nd-place finish is the highest by an EMU swimmer since Jacob Hanson finished fourth in the 200 Backstroke at the 2013 NCAA Championships. Additionally, the senior freestyle specialist's rank is the best of an Eagle in the event at least 25 years.
Competing at the national stage for the first time in his collegiate career, Gillis wrapped up his freshman season on the 3-meter springboard. Posting a score of 308.60, Gillis claimed 43rd, finishing ahead of divers from Missouri, USC, Kentucky, Virginia Tech, Ohio State, and the Air Force Academy.
Henry closes out the Eagles' 2015-16 season tomorrow, as the senior caps his career with the 100 Freestyle. Prelims begin at 10 a.m.
