Kyle Rodes led the way with a six-under 138 (68-70)
GOODYEAR, Ariz. (EMUEagles.com) – With the help of junior Kyle Rodes (Plymouth, Mich.-Plymouth), the Eastern Michigan University men's golf team sits in seventh-place heading into Saturday's final day of the Desert Intercollegiate. As a team, the Eagles fired rounds their lowest rounds of the season with a 284 and 283 for a two-round total of 567 (-9) on the par-72, 7,015-yard course.
The Eagles' 567 is actually two-strokes ahead of the program's 36-hole tournament record set in 2004 at the Hoya Invitational, Oct. 24-25. Unfortunately, for the Eagles, they still have 18 holes left to play. Should EMU shoot a 287-or-better in the final round, the squad would shatter EMU's 54-hole mark set at the Xavier Invitational, Oct. 14-15, 2002.
Rodes posted his sixth and seventh rounds of par-or-better this year, as he sits in a three-way tie for 10th after an opening day 138 (68-70). Iowa State's Denzel Ieremia is on top of the leaderboard with an 11-under 133 (66-67).
Sophomore Nic Ross (Dundas, Ontario, Canada-Highland Secondary) is tied for 28th with a 142 (69-73) followed by senior Brett White (Caledonia, Mich.-East Kentwood) with a 144 (73-71) in 44th. Rounding out the lineup, junior Philippe Weppernig (Lucerne, Switzerland-Kantonsschule Alpenquai Luzern-Owens C.C.) and freshman Beau Breault (Howell, Mich.-Hartland) are tied for 61st at two-over 146.
Playing as an individual, junior Joey Kremer (Toronto, Ontario, Canada-Senator O'Connor) carded rounds of 77 and 75 for a two-round tally of 152.
The third and final round of the Desert Shootout will take place on Saturday at Palm Valley Golf Club. For live stats and up-to-date standings, be sure to following along at birdiefire.com.
