The Eagles beat Brown, 4-1, and run-ruled CCSU 9-1

CHARLESTON, S.C. (EMUEagles.com) - The Eastern Michigan University softball team opened play at the College of Charleston Invitational Friday, March 18, at Patriot Points Athletic Complex, with wins over Brown University and Central Connecticut State University. The Eagles (9-11) downed the Bears, 4-1, before run-ruling Central Connecticut, 9-1, in five innings.

Game #1: Eastern Michigan 4, Brown 1
The Eagles provided freshman pitcher Nicolle Miranda (Wilmington, Calif.-Port of Los Angeles) with all the run support she would need in the first inning, putting a four-spot on the scoreboard. Freshman Sam Saporito's (Eastvale, Calif.-Eleanor Roosevelt) bunt single led off the bottom half of the first for the Green and White before freshman Olivia Logan (Riverview, Mich.-Riverview) advanced her to second on a sacrifice bunt. With a runner on second and just one out, the heart of the lineup came through for the Eagles. Freshman Amanda Akles (La Habra, Calif.-La Habra) then singled putting runners on the corners for EMU cleanup hitter, Abi Clark (Clinton, Mich.-Clinton). Ahead in the count, Clark laced a single to right, bringing Saporito home and moving pinch runner Elaine Whitbeck (Holland, Mich.-West Ottawa) into third. After an RBI-single off the bat of junior Michelle Kriegshauser (New Lenox, Ill.-Lincoln Way Central), sophomore Haley Hostetler (New Haven, Ind.-Woodlan) capped the inning with a two-out double that plated two, pushing Eastern's lead to 4-0 with one inning in the books.

The Eagles four-run edge stood until the third inning when the Bears broke the shutout. A leadoff walk came around to score for Brown, cutting EMU's lead to 4-1, before Miranda worked her way out of the jam. The freshman hurler fanned Brown's Emily Springfield, leaving the bases loaded with the Eagles coming to the plate in the bottom half of the frame. Miranda's inning ending strikeout proved to be a turning point for the Green and White as the Wilmington, Calif. product retired the next 10 batter's she faced.

With the Bears looking to rally in the top of the seventh, Miranda induced a flyout before back-to-back walks brought about a a visit to the mound and a pitching change. Sophomore Trisha Trujillo (Whittier, Calif.-California) entered the circle in relief, inheriting runners on first and second with one out. Trujillo needed just four pitches to secure the win, as Brown's Yeram Park popped up to Hostetler at short. Snagging the popup, Hostetler stepped doubled up the runner on second, ending the game 4-1 in favor of Eastern Michigan.

Miranda came away with her fourth win of the season, allowing one run on five hits over 6.1 innings of work while Trujillo recorded her first career save.

Offensively, Saporito and Kriegshauser paced the Eagles as each recorded two hits in the game. Saporito went 2-for-2 at the dish with a walk and a run scored while Kriegshauser finished the day 2-for-3 at the plate with an RBI and a double.

Game #2: Eastern Michigan 9, Central Connecticut 1
As they did versus Brown, the Eagles pushed a run across the plate in the first inning to take an early lead. Clark doubled to a gap in left-center, scoring freshman Lucy Lopez (Ventura, Calif.-Stockdale) who led the game off with a single. The Blue Devils evened the score at one in the bottom half of the frame, courtesy of a two-out RBI-single but the tie did not last long.

In the top of the second, senior Aoife Duffy (Powell, Ohio-Olentangy Liberty) led things off with a two-bagger down through the left side. Lifted for a pinch runner, Duffy headed to the dugout with Whitbeck replacing her one second. Using her wheels, Whitbeck swiped third before Hostetler walked to put runners on the corners. With senior Mady Hostetler (New Haven, Ind.-Woodlan) at the plate, the Eagles pulled off a double steal. Haley Hostetler cruised into second while Whitbeck stole home to give EMU a 2-1 lead.

After junior Abbie Minsker (Howell, Mich.-Hartland) made quick work of the Blue Devils in the second, the Eagles' offense exploded. Logan walked, Clark was beamed by a pitch, and Kriegshauser walked to load the bases for senior Abby Davidson (Westerville, Ohio-Olentangy Orange). Taking the first pitch she saw, Davidson ripped the 0-1 delivery through the left side, scoring two. Moments later, Haley Hostetler's two-run single and sophomore Brandice Olmos' (Riverside, Calif.-Grand Terrace) two-run double to left, extended Eastern Michigan's lead to 8-1. Logan capped the inning with a RBI-single up the middle, giving EMU an eight-run lead.

From that point on, Minsker retired nine of the next 10 batters she faced on her way to her third win of the season. Minkser went the distance in EMU's 9-1 run-rule win, allowing one run on three hits over 5.0 innings of work.

Duffy and Logan paced the Eagles' offense with two hits apiece while Davidson, Haley Hostetler, and Olmos registered two RBIs each.

The Eagles look to build upon Friday's success tomorrow, March 19, when they continue play at the College of Charleston Invitational. The Green and White take on the University of Connecticut at noon before squaring off with the tournament host Cougars at 4:30 p.m.
