LAKEWOOD RANCH, Fla. (EMUEagles.com) — In its first action of the 2016 spring season, the Eastern Michigan University women's golf team advanced to the semifinals of the 2016 Women's Mid-American Match Play Challenge on the par 72, 6,068-yards Royal Lakes Golf Course at the Lakewood Ranch Golf and Country Club.
After a first round bye, the second-seeded Eagles played Bowling Green State University to a 1-1-3 draw. However, Eastern Michigan was able to advance on a margin of victory tiebreaker by posting a 5&4 win in the dual.
In the match against the Eagles, the Eagles got a win from sophomore Thelma Beck (Baden, France-Lycee Sainte Anne) at the No. 2 position, but suffered a loss at the No. 4 spot when freshman Kritsuda Apiwatthanadol (Bangkok, Thailand-Somtawin Witead Suska Huaymongkhon School) fell. The other three matches would finish all square to put the team score tied at 1-1-3 overall.
BGSU's Erin Fahey picked up a 3&2 win over Apiwatthanadol to record BGSU's lone win of the match, but Beck edged Mikayla Baer, 5&4. Meanwhile, Kelsey Murphy (Plymouth, Mich.-Plymouth), Karyn Lee Ping (Brampton, Ontario, Canada-St. Augustine Secondary School) and Lauren Stephens (Dublin, Ohio-Coffman-Toledo) all finished their head-to-head matches all square through 18 holes of play.
