EMU tennis will play its fourth Big Ten opponent of the season
YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) – Coming off of a 1-1 weekend one week prior, the Eastern Michigan University tennis team returns to the court for a pair of matches this weekend, Feb. 5-6, in Iowa City, Iowa. The Eagles (2-3) will first take on the University of Iowa, Feb. 5, before squaring off with Marquette University Saturday, Feb. 6. Both matches will be held at the Hawkeye Tennis and Recreation Complex.
Friday's matchup with the Hawkeyes (1-0) will begin at 2:30 p.m. CT in Iowa City. The two squads have only met once previously. That matchup came back in 2010 when Iowa knocked off EMU, 6-1, Jan. 24. In that match, the Eagles' Miriam Westerink was the only member of the Eastern Michigan squad to come away victorious. At No. 3 singles, Westerink took home a two-set victory for the Eagles' lone point.
The Green and White has a more storied series with Marquette in comparison to Iowa, having squared off nine times before Saturday. In the 10th matchup, Eastern Michigan will look to even up the all-time series, as it currently trails, 5-4. Saturday will mark the first time that MU and Eastern will square off on the court since the 1995-96 campaign. The Golden Eagles (3-1) come into the match with EMU following their first loss of the season but have owned the most recent portion of the sereies, winning the last four, while Eastern took four of the first five in the series.
