The Green and White fell in their fourth contest against a Big Ten foe
IOWA CITY, Iowa (EMUEagles.com) -- The Eastern Michigan University tennis team traveled west to the University of Iowa Friday, Feb. 5, to square off with the Hawkeyes (2-0). The Eagles (2-4) fell, 6-1, in their four match against a Big Ten Conference opponent Friday afternoon.
The match started in doubles play as the Green and White fell in the first two matches of the dual. At No. 1 doubles, Iowa's Anastasia Reimchen and Zoe Douglas knocked off Andrea Martinovska, 6-3, while Ani Gogvadze and Marie Mayerova fell, 6-4, in the No. 2 doubles spot. Despite being tied with Elizabeth Thoms and Adorable Huckleby at No. 3, Renu Sharma and Anna Veleva's match went unifinisehd after the doubles point was settled and the Hawkeyes took a 1-0 lead.
Moving on to singles action, the Eagles dropped all but one match as Veleva defeated Aimee Tharun in three sets, 6-4, 4-6, 1-0 (8), in the No. 5 singles position. Sharma was the only other Eagle to take her opponent to three sets, but Huckleby was too much, topping Sharma, 7-5, 2-6, 1-0 (3), at No. 6.
"Disappointing performance on our end today," stated Head Coach Ryan Ray. "We need to get tougher overall, and especially when we have opportunities, to take them with the right mentality. Our shot selection needs to be smarter to accomplish this. I look for us to come hungry against Marquette tomorrow."
The Eagles return to action Saturday, Feb. 6, to square off with Marquette University. First serve is slated for 12 p.m. CT.
