AKRON, Ohio (EMUEagles.com) –
The Eastern Michigan men's track and field team came up just short at the Mid-American Conference Indoor Championships, Feb. 27, as the team finished runner-up with 135 points. Despite leading the first day, the Zips jumped ahead on the second day to take the title with 145.50 points

In the 200m dash, junior Tyler Brown (Findlay, Ohio – Findlay) took home the silver, clocking in at 21.31 to tie his career-best. The Findlay, Ohio native then moved to the 400m dash, where he was crowned the champion in 47.24. Brown also won the long jump yesterday, giving him two event wins, as well as one runner-up finish.

Senior Scott Bradley (Battle Creek, Mich. – Lakeview) followed up with another second-place finish, this time in the 800m. His time of 1:49.70 was a personal-best as well, and the seventh-fastest in EMU laurels. Graduate student Joshua Sabo (Akron, Ohio – Revere) also ran in the event, coming in seventh with a career-best 1:53.76.

Two Green and White runners managed to pick up points in the mile, with sophomore Csaba Matko (Racalmas, Hungary - Szechenyi Istvan Gimnazium) crossing the finish line in 4:09.63, which was good for fifth, as well as a new career-best mark. Just behind him, redshirt sophomore Nick Raymond (Erie, Mich. – Mason) clocked in at 4:10.98, giving him sixth. Finally, fellow redshirt sophomore Hlynur Andresson (Vestmannaeyjar, Iceland - Mountain Ridge) took ninth with a time of 4:17.36 one day after nabbing the silver in the 5000m.

Like the first day, the Eagles swept another distance event, taking the top-three spots in the 3000m. Redshirt junior Willy Fink (Maumee, Ohio – Maumee) took home his second event title of the meet, clocking in at 8:14.63. Nabbing the second-place spot was redshirt sophomore Mitch Lenneman (River Falls, Wis. – River Falls), who crossed the finish line in 8:17.73 for a personal-best time. Finally, redshirt sophomore Lahsene Bouchikhi (Antwerp, Belgium - Stedelijk Lyceum Paardenmarkt Luchthaven) took the bronze in a career-best 8:20.34.

The 60m hurdles saw two competitors finish in the top-five, as redshirt senior Solomon Simmons (Murrieta, Calif. – Murrieta Valley) crossed the finish line in fourth with a time of 8.14. Just behind him, freshman Frank Douglas (Mansfield, Ohio – Madison Comprehensive) nabbed fifth in 8.16. The 4x400m relay saw the Green and White take home another runner-up spot, as the group of seniors Jeff Elam (Latrobe, Pa. – Greater Latrobe Senior), Matthew Williams (Moreno Valley, Calif. – Vista Del Lago), and Mason Waynes (Kenosha, Wis. – Bradford) and Brown took the silver with a time of 3:09.57, putting them fifth in program history.

In the triple jump, Eastern had three competitors, with the freshmen duo of Micah Peters (York, Ontario – Vaughn Road Academy) and Nick Herbert (Portage, Mich. – Portage Northern) taking eighth and ninth, respectively. Herbert's mark of 14.04 meters/ 46 feet 0.75-inches was also a personal-best. Redshirt senior Keith Williams (Sherman, Ill. – Williamsville) notched a top-five finish in the shot put, taking fifth with a mark of 17.18 meters/ 56 feet 4.5-inches. Another freshman led the way in the high jump, as Cameron Hart (Columbus, Ohio – Bishop Hartley) finished ninth with a mark of 2.02 meters/ 6 feet 7.5-inches.

The Eagles took home another event crown in the form of the heptathlon, where Simmons defended his title from last season with a career-best 5608 points, which also makes him the top-ranked heptathlon participant in the EMU record books.. Simmons edged out a pair of athletes from Akron by finishing first in the 60m hurdles, and also posting top-three finishes in the pole vault and the 1000m run. His hurdles time of 8.09 was also a career-best. Redshirt junior Zach Waldron (Grand Rapids, Mich. – Northview) also had a solid day, notching career-bests in both the 60m hurdles and the 1000m run with times of 8.93 and 3:16.92, respectively. He finished fifth with 5054 points, setting a new personal-best by nearly 700 points. Finally, freshman Alex Jacobs (Dublin, Ohio – Dublin Jerome) turned in an eighth-place finish with 4243 points, also nabbing a career-best in the 60m hurdles.

At the end of the meet, Brown was named Most Valuable Performer, while redshirt junior Anthony Jones (Sandusky, Ohio - Sandusky) took home Most Outstanding Field Performer of the Year honors. The All-MAC teams are yet to be named, as they will be decided in the near future.
