Eagles Ready for Indoor MAC Championships

YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) — The Eastern Michigan University men's track and field team has completed the indoor regular season, and now turns their attention towards the Mid-American Conference Indoor Championships this weekend, Feb. 26-27. The Eagles will look to bring the conference title back to Ypsilanti after finishing runner-up a season ago.

Heading into the conference championship, the Green and White are ranked No. 36 in the country, just one spot behind host Akron, who also took home the indoor title last season. Other ranked MAC teams include Kent State at No. 29, which is the top-ranking among MAC schools, Buffalo at No. 98, and Central Michigan at No. 100.

The Eagles have five individuals ranked in the top-50 of their respective events heading into the conference championships. Leading the way is junior Tyler Brown (Findlay, Ohio - Findlay), who maintains an impressive top-10 ranking in the 400m, where he sits seventh with a time of 46.45, set at the SPIRE Invite, Feb. 12. Brown is also ranked in the long jump, where he clings to the 50th-ranked spot with a mark of 7.45 meters/ 24 feet 5.5-inches. His jump came at the Penn State National, Jan. 29.

Moving to the distance, redshirt junior Willy Fink (Maumee, Ohio - Maumee) is ranked in two separate events. Fink is also ranked in the top-10, as he sits at seventh in the 3000m with a time of 7:50.57, set at the Camel City Invite, Jan. 29. The redshirt junior has also been impressive in the 5000m, where he is ranked No. 32, running a 13:56.66 at the GVSU Holiday Open, Dec. 4, to open the season.

Finally, the team has two throwers in the top-50 of the weight throw, with redshirt junior Anthony Jones (Sandusky, Ohio - Sandusky) leading the way. Jones threw an impressive 21.84 meters/ 71 feet 8-inches at the Findlay Indoor Open & Elite Throws Competition, Feb. 12. His mark puts him at No. 9 in the nation. Redshirt senior Keith Williams (Sherman, Ill. - Williamsville) is also ranked in the event, coming in at No. 45 with a mark of 19.98 meters/ 65 feet 6.75-inches, which was also set in Findlay.

The MAC Championship is slated to get underway Friday, Feb. 26, at 11 a.m. with the heptathlon 60m. Friday's events will conclude with the finals of the women's distance medley relay at 5:45 p.m. The action will pick back up on Saturday, Feb. 27, with the heptathlon 60m hurdles. The final event of the championship will be the women's 4x400m relay, taking place at 4:40 p.m., before the awards ceremony at 5 p.m. For more information on the MAC Championship, please click here.
