The EMU Bats put together seven hits and five walks
GAINESVILLE, Fla. (EMUEagles.com) – Despite getting on the board first, the powerful bats of the No. 1 Florida Gators (4-0) were too much for the Eastern Michigan University baseball team to overcome in a 12-4 setback, Tuesday night, Feb. 23.
Eastern (3-2) managed seven hits and drew five walks against the Gators pitching staff. Three Eagles put together multiple hit games, with each of the three extending their hitting streaks to five games. Redshirt junior Marquise Gill (Paw Paw, Mich.-Paw Paw) had a 2-for-5 game with a double and stolen base. Redshirt junior Michael Mioduszewski (Dexter, Mich.-Dexter) and sophomore Brennan Williams (Commerce Township, Mich.-Walled Lake Northern) both had a pair of singles, with Mioduszewski knocking in a run and Williams scoring one.
The Eagles took the first lead of the game on an RBI groundout from senior Mitchell McGeein (Calgary, Alberta, Vauxhall). The run was setup by a lead-off double from Gill. The Gators were quick to strike back though, scoring four runs in the bottom half of the frame, chasing EMU starter junior Kevin Shul (Albuquerque, N.M. - Albuquerque Academy (College of Southern Nevada)). Coming in his relief was freshman Tyler Butzin (Dearborn, Mich.-John F. Kennedy) who promptly stuck out the final two hitters of the frame.
A scoreless second led to the third where the Gators broke out for five more runs on three hits. In the top of the fourth, EMU would load the bases and get a run on a bases loaded walk from senior Jackson Martin (Listowel, Ontario-Listowel), which made the game 9-2. The walk forced UF's starter from the game, but with the bases still loaded, the Gator reliever got out of the jam with no further damage.
The Gators immediately struck back with a two-run homerun in the bottom of the fourth, extending their lead to 11-2. It went to 12-2 in the sixth inning on an RBI groundout following a lead-off triple.
From there, a pair of EMU relievers shut down the UF bats the rest of the way. Senior Michael Marsinek (Streetsboro, Ohio-Streetsboro) pitched a scoreless seventh with a pair of strikeouts. Then in the eighth, freshman Caleb Hester (Coloma, Mich.-Coloma) made his EMU debut by pitching a scoreless frame.
In the meantime, EMU put a couple more runs on the board themselves. In the top of the eighth, freshman Max Schuemann (Portage, Mich.-Portage Northern) led off with his first career collegiate hit, a double, before advancing to third on an error. He came in to score two batters later on an RBI groundout from Mioduszewski.
Eastern struck for one more in the ninth when freshman Davis Feldman (Warren, Mich.-Brother Rice) collected his first career RBI in his first collegiate at-bat, scoring sophomore Luke DeVenney (Des Moines, Iowa-Des Moines). UF locked it down the rest of the way though, securing the 12-4 win.
Eastern will finish the mid-week series with Florida when the two teams make the trip further south to Lakeland for a night game under the lights at Joker Marchant Stadium, tomorrow, Feb. 23. The first pitch from the spring training home of the Detroit Tigers is set for 7 p.m.
