Eagles' Comeback Falls Short in Loss to Marist

Freshman Lucy Lopez recorded the first multi-hit game of her career in the loss
Sophomore Haley Hostetler (New Haven, Ind.-Woodlan) led the way at the plate, going 2-for-3 with an RBI and a run scored while freshman Lucy Lopez (Ventura, Calif.-Stockdale) registered the first multi-hit game of her career. Lopez finished the day 2-for-4 with one RBI.
Freshman Nicolle Miranda (Wilmington, Calif.-Port of Los Angeles) carried a no-hitter into the fifth inning as the game remained scoreless with three innings to play. An overturned call at the plate gave the Red Foxes (2-0) the go-ahead run before Marist tacked on three more.
Back-to-back doubles in the sixth followed by an RBI-single extended Martist's lead to six before Lopez ended the inning with an on-target toss to the plate. A single through the left side was fielded by Lopez who then threw out the runner at home with a clean tag by freshman Sam Saporito (Eastvale, Calif.-Eleanor Roosevelt).
Needing six to tie, the Eagles came to bat in the bottom of the sixth. A one-out single by senior Abi Clark (Clinton, Mich.-Clinton (Alma)) started the Green and White's rally. After senior Abby Davidson (Westerville, Ohio-Olentangy Orange) replaced Clark on first, senior Mady Hostetler (New Haven, Ind.-Woodlan) grounded to short. A quick toss to the second basemen called Davidson out at second before the call was overturned giving EMU runners on first and second with just one out. Taking advantage of the opportunity, back-to-back doubles by Haley Hostetler and sophomore Brandice Olmos (Riverside, Calif. - Grand Terrace) pushed two runs across the plate.
Senior Aoife Duffy (Powell, Ohio-Olentangy Liberty) kept the rally alive, capitalizing on a pinch hitting opportunity. Stepping into the batter's box in place of Saporito, Duffy delivered a sacrifice fly to score Hostetler from third. Lopez capped the inning with an RBI single to right center, cutting the deficit to two, 6-4.
Continuing to pitch in relief of Miranda, junior Abbie Minsker (Howell, Mich.-Hartland) made quick work of the Red Foxes in the seventh to bring the heart of the order to the plate for the Eagles. Davidson reached on an error with two outs to bring the tying run to the plate but a fly out to right field ended the game, 6-4, in favor of Marist.
Eastern closes out play at the EMU Madeira Beach Invitational, tomorrow, Feb. 21. First, the Eagles will take on George Mason at 11:30 a.m. before wrapping up the weekend against Siena at 2 p.m.
