Eastern posted wins over George Mason and Siena, Sunday, Feb. 21
MADEIRA BEACH, Fla. (EMUEagles.com) – The Eastern Michigan University softball team closed out play at the EMU Madeira Beach Invitational, Feb. 21, with wins over George Mason University and Siena College. In game one, the Eagles belted four home runs on their way to overpowering the Patriots, 9-1, in five innings. Eastern then came-from-behind to defeat the Saints, 7-3.
Game 1: Eastern Michigan 9, George Mason 1
The Eagles wasted little time jumping on the Patriots, pushing one across the plate on an RBI-double by freshman Amanda Akles (La Habra, Calif.-La Habra). The shot to the gap by Akles was only the beginning of what turned out to be a performance for the record books.
A perfectly executed suicide squeeze pushed EMU's lead to 2-0 before Eastern's bats exploded. A three-run home run off the bat of Akles cleared the fence in center, only to be followed by home runs by seniors Aoife Duffy (Powell, Ohio-Olentangy Liberty) and Abi Clark (Clinton, Mich.-Clinton(Alma)).
Carrying a 7-1 advantage into the bottom of the fourth, Akles sent the first pitch of her at bat out of the park. The two-run shot was Akles second of the game, and the fourth homer by the Eagles.
Leading 9-1 heading into the fifth, sophomore Trisha Trujillo (Whittier, Calif.-California) needed just 11 pitches to take care of the Patriots and secure the victory for the Eagles.
Akles became the first Eagle with two home runs in a game since the 2013 season to accomplish the feat, while Eastern's four total homers marked the second most in program history.
Finishing the game 3-for-3 with six RBIs, Akles tied the program record for runs driven in in a single game.
Game 2: Eastern Michigan 7, Siena 3
Siena jumped out to a 3-0 lead early in game two, capitalizing on a few EMU miscues before the Eagles pulled their way within one in the second inning. A chopper to the right side was mishandled by the Siena first baseman and dribbled out to the grass, allowing two runners to cross the plate for the Green and White.
The score stood at 3-2 until the fourth frame when junior Michelle Kriegshauser (New Lenox, Ill.-Lincoln Way Central) made the Saints pay for two more errors. Finding a gap in left center, Kriegshauser's double gave Eastern its first lead of the game, 5-3.
The Eagles then added runs in the fifth and sixth to push their lead to four, 7-3, while freshman Nicolle Miranda (Wilmington, Calif.-Port of Los Angeles) held the Saints in check at the plate.
With the win, the Eagles moved to 4-1 on the weekend and claimed the top spot at the tournament.
Eastern Michigan remains in the Sunshine State for the week before taking part in the USF Under Armour Series, Feb. 26-28.
