BOWLING GREEN, Ohio (EMUEagles.com) – The Eastern Michigan University women's gymnastics team kept up their record-breaking ways today, Feb. 13, in a tri-meet win over Bowling Green and Southeast Missouri State. The Eagles were able to break into the 196's for the first time in program history, finishing with a huge 196.6 to shatter the old record set Monday, Feb. 8, at Michigan.
Once again, the Green and White were very consistent on the day, with event scores ranging from 48.950 to 49.275. The team also had three scores of 9.9 or better, which is the most in one meet so far this season. Beam proved to be the catalyst of the meet, as the Eagles notched a program-best 49.275 on the event. From there, the team smashed their season-best floor total with a score of 49.225, and closed the day on vault with a 49.15.
"I'm obviously thrilled and extremely proud of the team," remarked Head Coach Jay Santos. "To be able to show up and perform how they did after last weekend is simply awesome. They are competing with great confidence right now and it is really showing in their approach and how they are taking care of the details."
"It was also great to see that the team responded well to some adversity," explained Santos. "We had a fall on both beam and floor, but the other five girls were able to focus and hit great routines. I'm very proud of how the team kept their focus and had high energy all through the meet."
Beginning the day on bars as one of the away teams, the Eagles' consistency came into play once again. The Green and White went six-for-six on the event, with every gymnast scoring a 9.7 or better. The sophomore duo of Catie Conrad (Brighton, Mich. – Brighton) and Kendall Valentin (Holmdel, N.J. – Holmdel) paced the team, notching a pair of 9.85's. Junior Lacey Rubin (Plainview, N.Y. – Plainview Old Bethpage John F. Kennedy) continued her hot streak, receiving another 9.825. Rounding out Eastern was junior Sydney McEachern (Winnipeg, Manitoba – Kelvin), scoring a solid 9.725. With one event finished, the Eagles held a slim 48.95 lead over Bowling Green's 48.8, and SEMO's 48.175.
Moving to beam, the Eagles had another historic rotation, setting a new program record for beam score with a massive 49.275. The Green and White notched a pair of 9.9's on the event, with junior Natalie Gervais (Winnipeg, Manitoba – Sturgeon Heights) and Rubin earning huge scores of 9.925 and 9.9, respectively. Both were career-highs, with Gervais now holding the second-best beam score in program history. Rubin now sits just behind her in a tie for third as well. Freshman Megan Hultgren (Rockford, Ill. – Sacred Heart Classical Center) pitched in a career-best 9.85, while Valentin earned another 9.85. After two rotations, the Green and White remained in first with a two-event total of 98.225.
"We had a lot of great individual performances, but I think the highlight would have to be Natalie going 9.925 on beam with a gorgeous routine, and Lacey going right after her with a 9.9," said Santos. "They were both fantastic."
The Green and White then followed up beam with their best team score on floor so far this season with a total of 49.225. Senior Kimberly Ebeyer (Greendwood, Ind. – Whiteland Community), McEachern and sophomore Rachel Slocum (Holly Springs, N.C. – Holly Springs) all finished with scores of 9.875. Additionally, both Ebeyer and McEachern finished with personal-bests. Conrad posted a career-best score as well, finishing with a 9.85. Finally, sophomore Megan Marino (Girard, Ohio – Howland) pitched in a 9.75, which was another personal-best. Behind a slew of personal bests, the Eagles held a four-tenth lead, 147.225-146.825, over Bowling Green heading into the final rotation.
With the team closing the day on vault, Eastern would need a solid rotation to break a 196 for the first time. The Eagles got that, and then some with an event total of 49.15, which tied for the second best in EMU history. Valentin posted her best vault ever, notching a personal-best 9.9 to pace the Green and White. Fellow sophomore Rachel Slocum had a great vault as well, scoring a 9.875. Also finishing with a score above 9.8 was Conrad, with a 9.825. The strong finish to the meet gave EMU a 196.600-195.425 victory over Bowling Green, with SEMO finishing third with a total of 192.800.
The Eagles return home next week for a Friday home bout against Western Michigan, Feb. 19. Action from the Convocation Center is slated to kick off at 6:30 p.m.
