Women's Track and Field Posts Strong Start to Weekend

The Eagles, spread over two meets, had a stellar day with many personal bests, as well as a broken record

ALLENDALE, Mich. & AMES, Iowa (EMUEagles.com) – The Eastern Michigan University women's track and field team turned in a stellar first day of competition at both the GVSU Big Meet and the Iowa State Classic today, Feb. 12. In addition to a slew of personal records, the 5000m run program record was toppled yet again this season.
In Ames, Iowa, sophomore Jordann McDermitt (Davison, Mich. – Davison) turned in the greatest 5000m time in program history, clocking in at a blazing 15:58.18 and shattering her old personal-best. She now controls the record by nearly 30 seconds, and currently sits at No. 6 nationally in the event. Additionally, junior Alsu Bogdanova (Kazan, Russia - Lyceum #83) ran in the 3000m, taking home the gold with a time of 9:16.91, setting a career-best. Senior Sofie Gallein (Gits, Belgium - University of Leuven) finished third in the event as well with a personal-best time of 9:18.41.
At the GVSU Big Meet, freshman Jessica Harris (Slidell, La. – Slidell) paced the Eagles in the 60m, qualifying for the finals with a personal-best time of 7.59. In the finals, she finished with the same time again, ultimately taking home third. Additionally, two other Eagles turned in career-bests in the event as well. In the 200m dash, the Green and White found similar success, as sophomore Jasmine Jones (Greensburg, Pa. – Hempfield Area) nabbed fourth-place by crossing the finish line in 24.62.
Jones led the team in the 400m dash as well, clocking in at 56.66, a personal-best, to take 11th-place. Like the 60m dash, two more Eagles also turned in the best times of their career. The trend continued in the 800m, with sophomore Rebekah Branham (Circleville, Ohio – Circleville) leading the charge by taking eighth in 2:12.87. Additionally, fellow sophomores Natalie Cizmas (Clinton Twp., Mich. – Chippewa Valley) and Claire Mesa (Rockford, Ill. – Rockford Lutheran) nabbed career-best times.
The Green and White only had one competitor in the 3000m, with redshirt freshman Allie Knoll (Warren, Mich. – Warren Mott) crossing the finish line in 10:36.40. A trio of runners in the 5000m managed to set personal-bests, as junior Anna Aldrich (Fremond, Ind. – Fremont) led the way with a time of 17:24.70. Moving to the 60m hurdles, senior Maya Carter (Racine, Wis. – Case) qualified to the finals with a time of 8.71, another career-best. Sophomore Tifani Byrd (Toms River, N.J. – Toms River North) also set a personal-best with a time of 8.84, narrowly missing out on a berth to the finals.
From there, the 4x400m relay group of Branham, Mesa, Cizmas, and senior Rebecca Quaintance (White Lake, Mich. – Walled Lake Northern) clocked in at 4:06.32. In the high jump, junior Kristina Coyne (Pittsburgh, Pa. – Chartiers Valley) turned in a mark of 1.63 meters/ 5 feet 4.25-inches. The Green and White had a solid finish in the pole vault shortly after, with the duo of senior Ellie Braidic (Pandora, Ohio – Pandora-GIlboa) and Natalie Uy (Kettering, Ohio – Fremont) took home both second and third. Braidic, claiming the silver, posted a final mark of 3.81 meters/ 12 feet 6-inches, while Uy was just behind with a vault of 3.66 meters/ 12 feet 0-inches.
Eastern also found success in the long jump, with junior Janina Pollatz (Grandville, Mich. – Grand Rapids Christian) taking home runner-up honors with a jump of 5.72 meters/ 18 feet 9.25-inches, which was a personal-best. Rounding out the jumps was junior Dayna Hurd (Carson, Calif. – Carson) with a jump of 11.16 meters/ 36 feet 7.50-inches. Finally, freshman Jada Taylor (Neptune, N.J. – Neptune) broke her personal-record in the weight throw, taking seventh with a toss of 15.35 meters/ 50 feet 4.5-inches.
The Eagles continue tomorrow, Feb. 13, with day two at both the Iowa State Classic and the GVSU Big Meet.
