Softball Falls in Extra Innings in Season Opener

The Eagles opened the 2016 season with a 6-5 loss to Evansville
TROY, Ala. (EMUEagles.com) – The Eastern Michigan University softball team opened the 2016 season with a 6-5 extra-inning loss to the University of Evansville, Feb. 12, in its first game of the Trojan Invite. The Eagles registered 11 hits in the game, but Evansville capitalized on three EMU errors to take the game, 6-5.
The starting lineup featured four freshman, two sophomores, a junior, and two seniors, with freshman Nicolle Miranda (Wilmington, Calif.-Port of Los Angeles) getting the nod in the circle. Miranda went the distance, pitching 8.0 innings while fanning 10. At the plate, junior Michelle Kriegshauser (New Lenox, Ill.-Licoln Way Central) led the way, going 3-for-4 with three RBI and a home run. Freshman Amanda Akles (La Habra, Calif.-La Habra) went 3-for-4 in her EMU debut while senior Mady Hostetler (New Haven, Ind.-Woodlan) was 2-for-3 with two RBI.
In a jam early, Miranda shook off the nerves and settled in in the circle. With the bases loaded for UE, Miranda sent back-to-back batters down on strikes, allowing the Eagles to escape the first frame unscathed.
The defense sent the Purple Aces down in order in the second, after a quick opening inning at the plate for themselves. A diving play by Akles at third to leadoff the inning was capped by Miranda's fourth strikeout of the day, leaving the game scoreless through one and a half innings of play.
Despite a leadoff double by Akles in the second frame, the Eagles could not push her across the plate.
After Evansville broke into the scoring column to take a 1-0 lead, the Eagles responded in the bottom of the third. Sophomore Brandice Olmos (Riverside, Calif-Grand Terrace) led off the inning with a single before Mady Hostetler (New Haven, Ind.-Woodlan) sent a blooper into right. Following a walk by freshman Olivia Logan (Riverview, Mich.-Riverview), Kriegshauser sent a 3-1 delivery up the middle to even the score at one.
Another error by the Eagles allowed Evansville to put another run on the board, but the Green and White answered in the bottom half of the inning. A trio of singles was followed by a two-run single by Mady Hostetler, giving EMU its first lead of the game, 3-2.
Evansville then tied the game at 3-all, eventually sending the game into extra innings.The Purple Aces then put up a three-spot in their half of the eighth, giving them a 6-3 edge.
Down by three, a two-run home run by Kriegshauser pulled the Green and White within one, but back-to-back pop outs ended the game with the score at 6-5 in favor of Evansville.
The Eagles return to the diamond tonight to close out opening day. EMU's tilt with Troy University is slated to begin at 6 p.m.
