Meet Information
YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) - Following a historic performance at the Mid-American Conference Championships two weeks ago, Oct. 29, the No. 25 Eastern Michigan University men's cross country team returns to the course, Friday, Nov. 11, at the NCAA Great Lakes Regional in Madison, Wis. After finishing third last season, the Eagles look to earn a top-two finish for an automatic team qualification to the NCAA Championships for the first time since 2005.
"The NCAA Great Lakes Regional again appears to be very competitive with the usual traditional powers in contention for national qualifying," remarked Head Coach John Goodridge. "As always, it will be an exciting and competitive race."
Last year at the NCAA Great Lakes Regional, the squad had their best performance since 2002, finishing third as a team with 102 points. Three Eagles earned top-25 finishes, as senior Nick Raymond (Erie, Mich. - Mason) led the way after clocking in at 30:40.1 to take eighth. Just behind him, Willy Fink took home 12th-place with a time of 30:55.8. Finally, redshirt junior Hlynur Andresson (Vestmannaeyjar, Iceland - Mountain Ridge) brought home a 17th-place finish after crossing the finish line in 31:10.8. Based on their performances, all three harriers earned all-region honors.
Most recently, the Green and White had an incredible race at the MAC Championships, turning in a performance for the record books after claiming the top-five spots for the first time in conference history. Raymond defended his individual title, as he was the first to cross the finish line once again, this time around with a time of 25:10.0. Just one step behind him in second was Andresson, who clocked in at 25:10.1, while junior Csaba Matko (Racalmas, Hungary - Szechenyi Istvan Gimnazium) took third in 25:10.3.
Rounding out the top-five were redshirt junior Abel Flores (Defiance, Ohio - Defiance) and junior Lahsene Bouchikhi (Antwerp, Belgium - Stedelijk Lyceum Paardenmarkt Luchthaven), who posted times of 25:10.4 and 25:11.2, respectively. All five brought home First Team All-MAC honors, while Goodridge was also named MAC Coach of the Year for the 11th time.
The Eagles have their work cut out for them this week, as the squad competes against four nationally-ranked teams according to the most recent United States Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) coaches' poll. Highlighting the field of 31 teams is No. 14 Wisconsin, No. 18 Michigan State, No. 21 Indiana, and No. 29 Michigan.
The race will be held at the Thomas Zimmer Championship Cross Country Course in Madison, Wis. The women will begin the event with a 6,000-meter race at noon, while the men are slated to kick off their 10,000-meter race at 1 p.m. For more information on the event, please click here.
