Eagles Remain Perfect with 193-104 Win Over Oakland

ROCHESTER, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) – Behind a balanced performance in the pool and a sensational performance on the springboard, the Eastern Michigan University women's swimming and diving team claimed its fourth consecutive dual victory of the season, Saturday, Nov. 12, against Oakland University. The Eagles (4-0, 2-0 MAC) swept four events, including the top-five spots on both the 1 and 3-meter dives to earn a 193-104 victory.
Strong relay performances provided the Eagles with an early edge as the Green and White finished 1-2 in the 200 Medley Relay. The team of senior Alexis Mitcheltree (Moon Twp., Pa.-Moon Area) and sophomores Delaney Duncan (Galesburg, Ill.-Galesburg), Dora Vrcic, and Stephanie Johnston claimed first with a time of 1:41.98. In second-place, freshman Claire Young (Grosse Pointe Farms, Mich.-Grosse Pointe South), senior Genna Worthley (Portland, Maine-Deering), sophomore Michal Liberman (Rosh Haayin, Israel-Begin), and senior Sierra Wagner (Huntsville, Texas-Huntsville) clocked in with a time of 1:44.16.
EMU posted a pair of top-three finishes in the 1000 free. Paced by a win by sophomore Nicole Swartz (Dayton, Ohio-Centerville), the Eagles also earned points on a third-place finish from sophomore Sarah Dombkowski (Canton, Mich.-Plymouth).
A first-place finish by senior Mary Grace Van Allen (Indianapolis, Ind.-North Central) led the way for the Eagles in the 200 freestyle. Then, returning to the pool after helping the Green and White to a relay win, Mitcheltree picked up a first-place honors in the 100 backstroke. Freshman Casey Gavigan (East Setauket, N.Y.-Ward Melville) touched in just behind Mitcheltree, taking second with a time of 56.55.
Duncan extended EMU's lead with a win in the 100 breaststroke, her third of the season, turning in a time of 1:01.72. Worthley rounded out the top-three finishers for the Eagles in the race, earning third after touching in in 1:04.43.
Sophomore Emilie Desnoyers posted her first individual win of the season in the 200 butterfly with a time of 2:06.09 to keep the Green and White's streak going. Meanwhile, freshman Kylie Sutherlin claimed second with a time of 2:08.18.
Eastern's win streak was halted in the 50 free as Oakland registered its first win of the afternoon, ending the Eagles' 12-event win streak. Johnston swam to a second-place finish with a time of 23.49 to give EMU another top-three mark.
From there, the Eagles turned things over to the diving squad as the teams headed to the break. On the springboard, junior Alli Shereda (Fraser, Mich.-Fraser) headlined a sweep of the top-five slots for the Green and White on the 1-meter, posting a score of 288.07. Junior Emily Tubbs (Monroe, Mich.-Monroe) and freshman Brielle Johnston (Ottawa, Ontario-Catholique Franco-Quest) rounded out the top-three, scoring 267.47 and 246.97, respectively. The group also swept the top-five places on 3-meter behind another win for Shereda. The Fraser, Mich. native scored a 293.25 to lead the way, while Brielle Johnston finished runner-up with a score of 269.70. Tubbs' 269.02 points gave her a third-place mark.
Stephanie Johnston nabbed third-place in the 100 free before Gavigan put Eastern back on track with a win in the 200 back. Clocking in with time of 2:02.51, Gavigan bested the field, while Mitcheltree secured second with a time of 2:03.30.
After a third-place finish by Worthley in the 200 breast, the Eagles swept the 500 free. Dombkowski led the way in a tightly contested race, ultimately claiming first with a time of 5:02.34. Swartz and Van Allen finished second and third, respectively, to complete the sweep.
In the 100 fly, the Eagles used a pair of top-three finishes to distance themselves from the Golden Grizzlies. Liberman clocked in with a time of 56.01 to take first, while senior Carly Jackson (La Porte, Ind.-La Porte) touched in with a time of 57.63 to finish third.
Sophomore Erika Guenther (Hudson, Wis.-Hudson) paced the Eagles in the 200 IM, propelling EMU to another sweep. Leading the way, Guenther clocked in with a time of 2:08.60 to take first, while Van Allen and Young rounded out the top-three. Van Allen posted a time of 2:09.07 to take second and Young finished right on her heels to claim third.
Eastern Michigan closed out the afternoon with a second-place finish in the 400 Free Relay behind the team of Wagner, Stephanie Johnston, Mitcheltree, and junior Chase Walker (Virginia Beach, Va.-Landstown(North Florida)). The second-place mark capped a 193-107 win for the Green and White.
The Eagles now take a few weeks off before returning to competition next month, Dec. 2-3, at the EMU Invitational. The meet is slated to take place in Jones Natatorium with action on the first day beginning at 3 p.m.
