Men's Golf Leads With Quick Start at Irish Gridiron Golf Classic

NOTRE DAME, Ind. (EMUEagles.com) – The Eastern Michigan University men's golf team leads the Fighting Irish Gridiron Golf Classic by two strokes over UTEP and Illinois State following the opening round of play on the Warren Golf Course Sunday, Oct. 9.
The Eagles fired a first round score of even-par 280 on the first day of the three day tournament. The Eagles are seven strokes ahead of Mid-American Conference foe Ball State. UTEP (+2) and Illinois State (+2) are tied for second, while Utah State (+3) and Notre Dame (+5) round out the top five.
Senior Joey Kremer (Toronto, Ontario, Canada-Senator O'Connor) fired a career-best 67 to hold down second-place at the close of Sunday's round. Kremer's previous low was 69 earlier this year in the middle round of the EKU Intercollegiate, Sept. 17. Just one stroke back in a tie for third is senior Kyle Rodes (Plymouth, Mich.-Plymouth), who added a 68 for his sixth round of par-or-better this fall.
Due to the after-affects of the flood that ravaged South Bend in August, particularly Juday Creek which abuts the course, the Warren Golf Course's 18th hole was been shortened to a 145-yard par-three. As such, the course is setup at 6,713 yards for this weekend's event at par-70.
Sophomore Beau Breault (Howell, Mich.-Hartland) added a 72 for 27th-place while redshirt senior Jared Multer (Battle Creek, Mich.-Lakeview-Grand Rapids C.C.) notched a 73. Rounding out the scoring was junior Nic Ross (Dundas, Ontario, Canada-Highland Secondary) with a 74 in a tie for 42nd.
Eastern Michigan returns to the course Monday, Oct. 10, at 10 a.m. on the first hole for the continuation of the Fighting Irish Gridiron Golf Classic. Live scoring is available at golfstat.com.
