YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) -
Following another solid outing at the Pre-Nationals Invitational, Oct. 15, the No. 14 Eastern Michigan University women's cross country team concludes its strong regular season with the annual EMU Fall Classic, Friday, Oct. 21. The meet will be utilized as a final opportunity for the Eagles to tune-up before the postseason.

"We're excited to host this meet," remarked Head Coach Sue Parks. "We will be using this race to select our final runner to participate in the MAC Championship, and I know that the girls who are racing on Friday will all be very motivated to try to earn that spot. We have some talented runners competing, including our MAC 800m champion, Rebekah Branham, 17:15 5000m runner, Danielle Bentzley, and fellow juniors Lauren Pottschmidt and Claire Mesa. Sophomore Leah Wallace and freshmen Abbi Stemple and Gabby Peck will also compete. I'm excited to see what this group can do."

Last week in Terre Haute, Eastern finished an impressive seventh as a team after totaling 255 points. The Eagles once again downed another ranked opponent, as then No. 22 Virginia finished behind EMU. The Green and White also bested a number of teams receiving votes in the United States Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) coaches' poll. Based on their performance, the Eagles jumped to a program-best No. 14 in the most recent coaches' poll, Oct. 18.

Junior Jordann McDermitt (Davison, Mich. - Davison) had another excellent outing at the meet, bringing home an 18th-place finish after clocking in at 20:32.0, which was a career-best 6,000-meter time by 10 seconds. For her efforts, McDermitt was named the Mid-American Conference Runner of the Week for the fourth time this season. Redshirt sophomore Natalie Cizmas (Clinton Twp., Mich. – Chippewa Valley) continued her strong season as well, nabbing 32nd after clocking in at 20:48.5.

Claiming the third spot for the Eagles was senior Alsu Bogdanova (Kazan, Russia – Lyceum #83), as the Kazan, Russia native crossed the finish line in 43rd with a time of 20:56.1. Junior Jenna Wyns (Londerzeel, Belgium – Sportschol KA2) also had a nice race, posting a time of 21:08.4 to finish 68th. Wyns' time crushed her previous career-best 6,000-meter time by nearly an entire minute.

The Eagles will be squaring off with a number of solid teams, including No. 6 Michigan and No. 27 Michigan State. Additionally, Bowling Green, Cleary, Concordia, Kalamazoo, Lansing CC, Schoolcraft, Toledo, Western Michigan, Windsor, and Wright State will be in attendance.

The 5,000-meter race will kick off with the women starting at 4:30 p.m., and the men following shortly after at 5 p.m. Shortly after the conclusion of the men's race, the Eagles will host a celebration to honor the 1966 men's cross country NAIA National Champions.
