Murphy Leads Women’s Golf In Opening Round of Rocket Classic

PORT CLINTON, Ohio (EMUEagles.com) – The Eastern Michigan University women's golf team posted team scores of 310 and 314 Monday, Oct. 10, at the Rocket Classic hosted by the University of Toledo. Senior Kelsey Murphy (Plymouth, Mich.-Plymouth) was the low Eagle at 151 (76-75) through 36 holes, as EMU is in sixth-place in a solid field of 14 teams with 18 holes remaining at the Catawba Island Club.
Murphy led the Eastern Michigan contingent on the opening day, as she is tied for ninth in the standings. Sophomore Kritsuda Apiwatthanadol (Bangkok, Thailand-Somtawin Witead Suska Huaymongkhon School) managed a 158 (82-76) on the opening day in a tie for 31st. Junior Thelma Beck (Baden, France-Lycee Sainte Anne) and freshman Maria Connelly (Waterville, Ohio-Anthony Wayne) each added a 160 in 38th, while sophomore Penelope Guilleux (Saint Maur Des Fosse, France-Arsonval) rounded out the lineup in 43rd with a 162 (79-83).
Competing as individuals, redshirt junior Brenna Hammond (West Bloomfield, Mich-Detroit Mercy) posted a 169 (87-82) and freshman Julia Stevenson (Milford, Mich-Milford) notched a 170 (84-86).
Western Michigan is in first-place in the team standings after shooting a 601 (300-301). The Broncos' Julia Champion is atop the individual standings after shooting 146 (73-73) on the opening day. She holds a two-stroke lead over Eastern Kentucky's Elsa Moberly (79-69-148), Bradley's Ally Scaccia (75-73-148) and Pinyada Kuvanum (71-77-148) of Toledo.
The Rocket Classic will wrap up Tuesday. Tee time is set for 9 a.m.
