BREAKING DOWN THE BOBCATS: Ohio enters the matchup as the No. 21 ranked team in the National Wrestling Coaches Association Poll, as well as the No. 5 ranked team in the MAC. Their record sits at 4-1 on the year, with a 0-1 MAC ledger. They swept their three duals at the EMU duals, with wins over Michigan State. Edinboro, and Olivet. The Bobcats also have a dual win over Chattanooga, while their lone loss came at the hands of No. 8 Missouri, 27-9.
Individually, Ohio features two grapplers in the InterMat top-20, with Cody Walters at No. 9 in 174 lbs. and Phil Wellington sitting at No. 11 in 197 lbs. They also have six wrestlers in the MAC top-4, with Spartak Chino (No. 3, 157 lbs.), Austin Reese (No. 4, 165 lbs.), Walters (No. 2, 174 lbs.), Andrew Romanchik (T-No. 3, 184 lbs.), Wellington (No. 2, 197 lbs.), and Jesse Webb (No. 4, HWT).
ALL-TIME VS. OHIO: Since 2005-06, EMU is 2-8 with its last win against the Bobcats coming in 2011-12, a 22-14 decision.
LAST TIME WE MET: The Eastern Michigan University wrestling squad dropped it third-straight dual and second Mid-American Conference match to Ohio University, 20-15, last season.
The Eagles (7-6, 0-2 MAC) notched four victories on the day, including one by pin, while the Bobcats (5-4, 1-3 MAC) earned their first conference victory of the season with six bout wins, including two extra-points victories. Four of EMU's losses came against nationally ranked wrestlers.
HEAD-TO-HEAD: Based on Ohio's projected starters for Friday's bout, they return five starters from last year's dual, with four of the returnees winning their matchups. Meanwhile for EMU, they have five returning grapplers from last season's bout as well, however only one of them, Gage Hutchison, won his match, pinning his opponent in just 31 seconds.
The only rematch from last season slated for Friday will be the marquee bout of the night when No. 11 Phil Wellington faces No. 14 Anthony Abro. Wellington got the better of Abro last season with a 6-2 decision. It will actually be the third time these two will face-off in dual action, the first came in 2012-13 when both were redshirt freshmen. Wellington took that bout as well, with a 4-2 decision.
Friday will also see a rematch between No. 9 Cody Walters and Jacob Davis from the 2013-14 dual, when Walters took a 4-0 decision.
MILESTONE WIN OVER NORTHERN IOWA: The Eastern Michigan University wrestling team completed a milestone dual win by defeating the University of Northern Iowa, 22-14, in Mid-American Conference action at the Convocation Center Wednesday night, Jan. 6. The victory marked the first ever program victory over the Panthers for EMU in seven attempts.
The Eagles (7-2, 2-0 MAC) won six of the ten matches on the night, including one by major decision and another by pinfall in the final match of the night to secure the victory. Three other wins came from decisions, while the sixth came on a tiebreaker.
UP NEXT ON THE MATS: The Eagles have a week off until going on the road again, this time to Columbia, Mo. to face the No. 8 ranked Missouri Tigers. The bout is set to begin at 7 p.m. CT, Friday, Jan. 15.
DOUBLE TROUBLE: Entering the final season of their storied careers, redshirt seniors Anthony Abro and Vincent Pizzuto are near the top of the EMU record book in career wins. Abro has 87 career wins, while Pizzuto has 81. This is good for a tie for sixth place and a tie for ninth place on the all-time list, respectively. Steve Brown is the program leader in victories, racking up 117 from 1984-88.
ABRO RANKED NATIONALLY: Redshirt senior Anthony Abro is currently ranked 14th at 197 by InterMat wrestling, while also being ranked 17th by TheOpenMat.com Abro is coming off of his best season as an Eagle, in which he racked up 28 wins, and ended his season with a top-16 finish at the NCAA Championships.
