EMU moves to 7-3 in duals on the season
ATHENS, Ohio (EMUEagles.com) – The Eastern Michigan University wrestling team dropped a tough match to No. 21 Ohio University, 19-12, in Athens, Ohio Friday night, Jan. 8. The Eagles moved to 7-3 on the season and 2-1 in the Mid-American Conference.
EMU took four duals on the night, all by decision. The losses they suffered were five by decision and one by major decision.
The meet started at the top with redshirt freshman Armando Torres (Lorain, Ohio-Elyria) looking to start the Eagles out on the right note. After the first period he was tied 2-2, but he only notched one more point the rest of the way, dropping his decision 7-3. Next up was redshirt sophomore Blake Caudill (Butler, Pa.-Butler) looking to get EMU on the board, but he dropped his match 19-6 to give OU the early 7-0 lead.
EMU turned things around starting at 141 lbs., when redshirt sophomore Kyle Springer (New Boston, Mich.-Davenport Assumption) racked up the points in a 13-6 decision victory. It moved his dual record to 7-2 on the season. That was followed up with a hard fought 6-2 decision for redshirt junior Nicholas Barber (Cleveland, Ohio-St. Edward) to pull the Eagles within one, 7-6. Barber is 3-0 in MAC duals this season, and 7-2 overall in duals.
Looking to take the lead, redshirt junior Devan Marry (Hudson, Mich.-Hudson) faced off against the No, 3 ranked MAC wrestler Spartak Chino. It was a tight match, as Marry only trailed 3-1 in the final period. He only trailed 3-2 late in the match and almost secured a late takedown for the win, but Chino held off to take the 3-2 decision.
Next up at 165 lbs. was redshirt freshman Dakota Juarez (Grand Haven, Mich.-Grand Haven) squaring off against the No.4 MAC wrestler Austin Reese. Juarez was up to the challenge, securing the 3-1 decision win with an escape and a takedown, taking the score to 10-9. Juarez is also 3-0 in MAC duals this season, while going 5-1 in overall duals.
Facing another tough matchup at 174 lbs. was redshirt junior Jacob Davis (North Ridgeville, Ohio-St. Edward) going up against No. 9 nationally ranked Cody Walters. Davis put up a valiant effort, but ultimately fell in a 6-0 decision, extending the OU lead to 13-9.
Next up was redshirt freshman Derek Hillman (Woodhaven, Mich.-Woodhaven-Brownstown) facing No. 3 ranked MAC wrestler Andrew Romanchik. Despite controlling the pace most of the bout, Hillman dropped the match 6-3, giving OU the 16-9 advantage before the final two matches.
In the premiere bout of the night, No. 14 redshirt senior Anthony Abro (Canton, Mich.-Canton) matched up against longtime rival No. 11 Phil Wellington. After the first period, Abro trailed 4-2, but couldn't get any closer, dropping his match by 8-3 decision. In the final match of the night, redshirt sophomore Gage Hutchison (Buchanan, Mich.-Buchanan) represented the Eagles at heavyweight. He ended the dual on a high note with a 5-2 decision to finish the dual at 19-12. It was Hutchison's sixth dual win of the season.
